Boris Johnson extends lead in race to become PM

Winning 143 of 313 votes cast in a third-round ballot of Conservative lawmakers on Wednesday, Boris Johnson stretched his lead among Conservative lawmakers, and upstart Rory Stewart was eliminated from the contest, as the race is down to the final four. Many think Johnson, with such a substantial lead, is highly likely to become Britain's next prime minister.

Born in New York to wealthy upper-middle class English parents in 1964, Johnson’s birth was registered with both the US authorities and the city's British Consulate, thereby granting him both American and British citizenship. Johnson left the US when he was five years old, but remained a dual citizen until he renounced his US citizenship in 2017, which might be a result of a high US tax bill he once called 「absolutely outrageous」.

Johnson was educated at the European School of Brussels, Ashdown House, and Eton College. He read Classics at Balliol College, Oxford, where he was elected President of the Oxford Union in 1986.
After graduating from Oxford, Johnson landed a trainee reporter job at The Times newspaper in 1987. But he was dismissed within a year for concocting a quote in an article about king Edward II. "It was awful -- I remember a deep, deep sense of shame and guilt," he told BBC television when recalling the incident in 2013.
During a decades-spanning career, first as a journalist and then a politician, Johnson had achievements and controversy.
A stream of gaffes have led many to write Johnson off as an atypical politician that some people think is concerned more with publicity stunts than with the nuts and bolts of political reform. He has a reputation for being terrifically late. He once bulldozed a ten-year-old Japanese boy in a game of rugby, and he is the only London mayor to have fallen into a river in spectacularly public fashion.

Yet somehow, 「BoJo」 came out of these events with his reputation enhanced. After flattening the young boy, he offered him a rugby ball and a pat on the back. After the embarrassing swim, he emerged to crack a joke about the refreshing nature of the water. And after he found himself stranded on a zipline over London park, then prime minister David Cameron joked that only Boris』 career could benefit from his getting stuck on a wire.

Winning twice in the London mayoral election in 2008 and 2012, both challenging Labour rival Ken Livingstone. After two terms as mayor, he was an insubstantial politician by focusing on issues of crime and transportation.
After Theresa May became leader of the Conservative Party and Prime Minister, in July 2016 she appointed Johnson as Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs. His most memorable moments as secretary of foreign affairs are some of his gaffes.
Boris』 slack-jawed deeds include penning an insulting poem on Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, attributing incumbent US President Barack Obama’s opposition on Brexit to his Kenyan ancestry and inappropriately comparing EU to Napoleon and Hitler.

As the face of the official Brexit campaign in the 2016 referendum, Johnson has always maintained a hard stance on Brexit. In a recent television debate, Johnson repeated his pledge to take Britain out of the EU by October 31, again saying the only way to do so was to prepare for a so-called no-deal exit and concentrate on winning a new trade deal.
Almost three years since Britain voted to leave the EU, the country, parliament and both main parties are deeply divided over how, when and even whether Brexit should happen. With a simple message similar to the soundbites Johnson used in the 2016 referendum campaign, Johnson has managed to persuade much of his party that only he can rescue it from electoral disaster by delivering Brexit.
