Teen Tests His Nerve against A Cargo Train

A teenager had a lucky escape when he tried to test his quick reactions against a roaring freight train, railway police said Friday.

Police said the 19-year-old man surnamed Gao, from Chongqing City, just sat on the railway tracks while the train driver was heading straight toward him.

He was unhurt after the driver saw him and hit the emergency brakes, stopping the cargo train just meters away from where he sat on the track, police said.

"He sat on the rail firmly, paying no attention to the continuous siren alarms at all," recalled the train driver yesterday.

The driver and rail police said they thought the man was trying to commit suicide.

But he was just curious, Gao told police. He said he had never seen a train or rail tracks before he moved to work in Shanghai's Fengxian District this April.

When he saw the train getting closer, Gao was determined to stick to the rails until the last seconds to prove he was "faster than a train," he told police.

"If not for the good weather that provided me with enough visibility to see him in time, he could have been easily hit," said the train driver.

The man was released by railway police after being warned of the dangers.   （實習編輯：顧萍）
