我有個朋友最近想要自己做餐飲，一直在聽他說餐飲的利潤有多麼多麼可觀，但重點是他現在都沒有籌齊前期所需的資金，就已經在開始幻想之後的收益了，讓我不得不說：It is not good to start counting your chickens when you do not even have the cash to start your own venture.
大家千萬不要誤會，我不是讓他在沒有籌集好資金前就不要去數雞，而是勸他不要太早就下定論。
今天我們要學習的短語就是count chickens，它字面上的意思的確是數雞，但是真正表達的含義是to start making plans about something that is based on something in the future which may or may not happen.為某事做預測、做計劃，但這件事還飄忽未定，會不會發生誰也說不清楚。
所以，我告訴我朋友的那句話，意思是說：Don't make plans based on future events that might not happen. 不要給未來還未知的事情下結論，別太早預測，也不要高興得太早。就像有的人彩票還沒有中獎，就開始盤算著這筆錢應該怎麼用，是一樣的道理。
Don't count your chickens. Your investment may not fetch you a 50 percent profit every year.
不要過於樂觀了，你的投資不一定每年都會有50%的收益。
count chickens其實是一個縮略形式，完整的形式是don't count your chickens before they're hatched.
字面上的意思是在小雞孵化之前不要去計算會有多少只雞，因為誰也不知道到底有多少。
The chicken eggs would not always hatch out and hence a farmer counting the chicken eggs before they hatch would be over-estimating his future profits.
比如一個農夫在雞還沒有孵化出來之前就開始計算未來的收益，肯定會過高估計的。
When my mom heard that I was preparing my campaign before even being nominated, she warned me, "Don't count your chickens before they're hatched.
當我媽媽聽說我還沒有被提名就在準備競選的時候，警告我說：別太早下結論了。
俗話說：希望越大，失望就越大。如果你對一件事或者一個人抱太大的希望，一旦沒能如願，或者跟你想像的有差距，你就會感到很大的落差感，從而覺得失望。
People who count their chickens before they are hatched are often disappointed.
She has been counting her chickens before they are hatched and has already bought a dress even though nobody has asked her to the ball yet.
雖然到現在都還沒有人邀請她去參加誤會，但是她已經買好了裙子了，真是高興得太早了。
She wanted to buy a dress in case someone asked her to the dance, but I told her not to count her chickens before they are hatched.
她想買條裙子以防有人邀她去跳舞，但是我跟她說不要太早做準備，再看看。
下面我們來看一個對話：
A: This new business venture that I am involved in is awesome. Early profit projections are amazingly high. I think I will go and buy a fancy new car.
我參與的這個新商企太棒了，早期利潤預測特別高，我覺得我可以去買輛酷炫的新車了。
B: Don't count your chickens before they are hatched.
別高興得太早了。
A: You don't think that I should buy a new car? I am going to be rich.
你不覺得我該買輛新車嗎？我馬上就要成大款了。
B: You should wait until you actually see the money.
等你見到錢再說吧。
