In my music band lessons, whatever the musical style I introduce, I always refer to specific artists that my students should check out on YouTube to understand better the related music's feel and mood. I also recommend certain music styles connected to certain instruments; e.g., when some bass students are into Rock music, I still strongly encourage them to check out Funk or Disco music recordings that often offer a vibrant instrumental bass culture.
At the same time, I always remain open to repertoire proposals of my students, whose inquiry often brings new "diamonds" to our lessons; it really helps my own inquiry as an educator and enriches the curriculum, whose content is recently (especially since the BC new curriculum was introduced) preferred to be more of a student's choice.
Generally, I mostly provoke a guided inquiry, often structured whenever a specific project is related to it, but very often not structured, leaving it open to the personal taste and the time that my students have to spend on it.
