SUICIDE.
India has one of the highest youth suicide rate.
Every hour a student kills himself in India.
Why?
Look at these statistics:
According to Hindustan times,
11.5 lakhs students appeared for NEET in 2017 for 56000 seats in medical and dental institutes across the country.
Around 11.8 lakhs appeared for JEE Mains in 2017, out of them roughly 30000 actually get admission in the top institutes.
When there is so much competition, the chances of getting so called 『success』 in these entrance examinations are very low.
And you probably know that a good number of them actually don't want to be a doctor or an engineer then why, why do these students still appear for something they don't wanna be?
The answer is to satisfy the insatiable desires of their parents.
And,when they fail to do that, they just don't have an option to think about other than suicide. It's not a great feeling to disappoint your parents. Those who have gone through that, know what I am talking about.
As I write this answer,a story of a girl is constantly flashing through my mind.
This is a story of a girl who killed herself due to her bad scores in JEE Mains.
This is what hindustantimes wrote about her in the exact same words:
「It’s not because of bad scores in JEE Mains. I was expecting worse. It’s because I』ve started hating myself to the extent that I want to kill myself,」 wrote 17-year-old Kriti Tripathi in a suicide note before jumping to her death from a five-storey building in Kota on April 28.
Kriti scored 144 marks in the JEE Mains 2016 results declared on April 27, which was 44 marks higher than the 100-mark cut-off so her suicide set off speculation about the cause.
She felt she wasn’t made for science. 「You manipulated me as a kid to like science… I took science to make you happy,」 she wrote addressing her mother. 「I had interest in astrophysics and quantum physics and would have done a BSc… I still love writing, english, history (sic)… and they are capable of exciting me in the darkest times…」
Warning her mother to not do 「the manipulative stuff」 with her younger sister, who is in class 11, she wrote, 「She deserves to be allowed to explore and chose among fields.」 Kriti also advised her sister to do what she loved. 「…only what you love brings happiness and that is the only thing you can excel in…」
It’s heartbreaking.
The story is not just of this girl. This happens in almost every other house. The parents decide what their child will study, where he will work, whom he will marry and so on.
For what? For validation from the society.
The problem is not just the suicide. There are so many children who go depressed, get addicted to drugs and waste their precious life.
I wrote an anonymous answer a few days ago for a question on Indian parenting. I have copied and updated a few parts from there.
It’s going to be blunt so be ready.
Here it goes:
Indian parents suck at parenting.
I won't generalise but most of them suck.
A typical Indian parent mentality:
They want their kids to score the most in the class. If you can't, you're disappointing them.
(In a class of 50 students how can everbody be a topper.)
They are emotionally abusive. They just don't care about the feelings of the kids. They keep reminding their kids how many sacrifices they are doing for them.
(I would say why raise kids if you're gonna sacrifice.)
They don't send their kids to play out and when the kids grow up they curse them for lying on the couch all day.
For them, Career of their kids is everything. I agree.
But that too will be decided by them crushing the dreams of their kids who could have been the next Bob dylan, or the next A.R. Rehman, or the next Zuckerberg.
According to them there is no such thing as depression or depression is an excuse to run away from studies.
If that was not worse, they will decide whom to marry.
And, If the marriage is not working out figure it out. Divorce is not an option.
If you are a boy and decide to go for love marriage(inter caste), there is a high chance they』ll abandon you and if you are a girl, there is a high probability of getting killed by your own parents.
This keeps happening around you and in most cases are not reported.
They will teach you everything but sex. We are a billion but won't talk about sex.You are supposed to learn it on your own.
And if you are gay,God bless you, for they will try to fix it no matter what and will marry you irrespective of your sexual orientation. They think everything will be fine after marriage or they believe that it is possible to convert someone from gay to straight.
I read a story of a guy who was married to a girl regardless of being gay. Her mother tried to kill herself after finding out her son was gay and pressured her son to marry to a girl.
I think these things are changing with the new generation but at a very small rate.
We need a bigger change.
I am all against reproducing. We are already a billion. Please, don't go for kids because everybody around you have them or choose adoption over reproducing.
I wrote an answer onwhy you should not reproduce.
