如同漢語一樣，英語也經常運用「否定之否定」的修飾手段來表達肯定的涵義。上面這個句子的意思相當於Every rule has exceptions. 上一句是通過「雙重否定」(double negation)或「加重否定」(cumulative negation)的no和but的連用來加強語勢；後一句是正面的說法，語氣較弱。在上一個句型中，but是關係代詞，表達that(or who)not的意味。

有時候愚蠢的人也會給人出個好主意。
下面的句子也是屬於「否定之否定」句型，它們也具有加強語勢的修辭效果:

任何語言都比不上數學語言那麼精確和明瞭。

他每次到沙田總要到圖書廣場去轉一趟。
下面的一些英語諺語也是採用「雙重否定」的結構來表達「強化肯定」的涵義:
Never sweet without sweat.
不吃苦，何來甜。
Never smoke without fire.

Nothing is impossible to a willing heart.
誠心誠意，無事不成。
請注意，在下列句中，but既不是關係代詞，也不是從屬連詞或並列連詞，而是介詞:
No one but you can do it.
這件事只有你才幹得了。
There is no hiding of evil but not to do it.
若要人不知，除非己莫為。
在下列句中，第一個but是動詞，第二個but是名詞。
