四月是最殘忍的月份，在死去的
土地裡哺育著丁香，混合著
記憶和欲望，又讓春雨
撥動著沉悶的根芽。
冬天使我們溫暖，把大地
覆蓋在健忘的雪裡，用乾枯的
球莖餵養著一個小小的生命。
夏天令人吃驚，從施坦伯格西吹來
一場大雨；我們在柱廊下暫避，
太陽出來繼續趕路，走進霍夫加登，
喝咖啡，閒聊了一個小時。
我根本不是俄國人，生在立陶宛，純德國血統。
我們幼年時，住在大公爵那裡——
我表兄家，他帶我出去滑雪撬，
我很害怕死。他說，瑪麗，
瑪麗，緊緊抓住。於是我們滑下去
在大山上，你感到自由自在。

APRIL is the cruellest month, breeding

《荒原》全詩433行，共5章，用多種語言以組詩的形式寫成。第一章《死者的葬儀》以戲劇性的幾個場景全面地顯示現代西方文化的危機。此處節選的是詩歌一開始寫的西方文明的荒蕪景象。
