I know you must know someone,either at work or in personal life, who is really a good listener. No matter what kind of situations we are in, he always seems to know what to say – and how to say it – so that we feel we are communicating and staying connected. They are caring and considerate, and sometimes even if when we can't find a solution to our problems, we are usually left feeling more hopeful and optimistic.
We usually label these people with high 『Emotional Intelligence』 or high EQ (Emotional Quotient)
First of all, Emotional Intelligence is a skill! Great news! Because that means it can be learnt and trained! According to Psychology Today, Emotional Intelligence is the ability to identify and manage your own emotions and the emotions of others. It is generally said to include three skills:
1. Emotional awareness, including the ability to identify your own emotions and those of others;
2. The ability to harness emotions and apply them to tasks like thinking and problems solving;
3. The ability to manage emotions, including the ability to regulate your own emotions, and the ability to cheer up or calm down another person.
Each of us has different personalities, different wants and needs, as well as different ways of showing our emotions. Learning how to navigate your message and create an impact on different audience takes tact and cleverness, especially when the stakes are high. That's also where the Emotional Intelligence kicks in.
Since the term 『Emotional Intelligence』 was first coined in 1990, major corporations around the world have embraced the concept that high emotional intelligence can drive up working cultures and improved results.
Daniel Goleman, widely recognized as the father of EQ, helped to spread the ideas across. According to him, Self-awareness, Self-regulation, Motivation, Empathy and Social Skills are five major components of Emotional Intelligence.
