口語、文字之外，手勢也是實用的交流神器，但同一個手勢在不同的語境可能有完全不同的含義，不小心可能鬧出大笑話。今天我們就來聊一聊那些常用手勢的含義。
手的不同部位
大拇指、小拇指、手心、手背……
這些形容手勢必不可少的詞，用英語怎麼說呢？
圖上標明的說法之外，在稱呼具體某個手指（digit）時，也可以直接簡單地用序數詞加digit，比如食指second digit，無名指fourth digit。
不同手勢的含義
1. V sign or Victory hand
首先，幾乎全世界通用的一個表示開心、慶祝的手勢——比V。
The V sign is a hand gesture in which the index and middle fingers are raised and parted, while the other fingers are clenched. It may seem to be a universal sign of happiness and celebration.
但是如果不留神在比V的時候把掌心對著自己，手背對著別人，這個動作就會給對方帶來被冒犯的感覺。
If you do it with your palm facing yourself, it can mean some four-letter word(罵人的話) in in some Commonwealth nations. The insulting version of the gesture is often compared to the offensive gesture known as " the finger ".
2. Fingers Crossed
看美劇、歐美明星的話，一定對這個食指、中指交叉的動作很熟悉。這是一個西方十分常見的手勢，用來表示希望一切順利、如人所願，在日常英語會話時也常說「 Let’s keep our fingers crossed」來許願、祈福。
To cross one's fingers is a hand gesture commonly used to wish for luck. Occasionally it is interpreted as an attempt to implore God for protection.
據說，交叉手指祈願的習俗來自基督教，他們相信象徵著上帝的十字架能驅邪避災，而食指中指交叉正是用來代表十字架。
Common use of crossed fingers is found in the Christians who would cross their fingers to invoke the power associated with Christ's cross for protection, when faced with evil.
但是如果你在越南擺出這個手勢來祝福別人，被祝福的人卻一點兒也不覺得被祝福了。
This gesture won't bring you good luck in Vietnam. There, crossed fingers symbolize a part of the female anatomy and can be considered very rude when flashed at another person.
3. ILY sign and Devil horns
「我愛你」，怎麼用手勢來表達？畫一個愛心？丘比特之箭？其實美國有一個非常簡單實用的手勢能夠讓你「說」出「我愛你」，叫做ILY sign。
這個手勢最早來源於美國手語，把「I love you」的三個單詞首字母的手語組合到一起，就成了「我愛你」的手勢。
The sign originated among deaf schoolchildren using American Sign Language to create a sign from a combination of the signs for the letters I, L and Y (I Love You).
如果去聽搖滾重金屬音樂會，會發現搖滾歌手們常做的一個手勢其實和ILY Sign非常相似，叫做Devil horns。
與我愛你手勢稍微不同的是，搖滾手勢Devil horns會把大拇指也放下去。
A similar-looking but unrelated variation (thumb toward the palm rather than thumb extended) appears in heavy metal music culture as a "devil's horns" hand-sign.
「惡魔之角」手勢常用於搖滾重金屬音樂，但在義大利、西班牙、葡萄牙等一些地中海和拉丁國家，這個手勢則可能被理解為「戴綠帽子」了。
The sign is often associated with heavy metal music and a symbol of fellowship for its listeners. In many Mediterranean and Latin countries, it can be used to indicate that someone's wife has been unfaithful.
4. Thumbs-Up
豎大拇指也是一個非常實用的手勢，我們中文裡常說「給你豎大拇指」來表達讚賞，英語裡也有「 give a thumbs-up」的說法。此外，如果去西方國家旅行，也可以用豎大拇指來攔過往的計程車。
不過，要注意的是，在希臘、義大利、阿富汗的一些地方，豎大拇指表示完全相反的意思——極度的厭惡。
The thumbs-up signals approval in most places, but in Afghanistan, Iran, parts of Italy, and Greece, it means "up yours!" So next time you're trying to hitchhike in these places, you should reconsider before sticking out your thumb.
