「let me down」不是「讓我下去」,這個意思一定要記住!

let someone down

let someone down basically means to disappoint someone, to fail someone because you fail to meet the expectation of someone. 

表達的意思是讓某人失望了，（fail用作及物動詞的時候意思是使...失望）因為你沒有達到或者滿足他們的期許。

 

Please don't let me down. I am depending on you.

請別讓我失望，我全靠你了。

 

When I was sent to prison, I really felt I had let my parents down.

當我被送進監獄的時候，我真真切切感受到我讓父母失望了。

 

 

你邀請了一個很重要的朋友來參加你的生日宴，ta也答應要來，但最後卻沒有出現。

I was counting on John to come, but he let me down.

我還指著John會來，他太讓我失望了。

 

再比如你跟朋友約好了要見面，可是因為臨時有急事，你沒能赴約，你可以跟ta道歉說：I'm sorry I let you down. Something came up, and I couldn't meet you.

真不好意思，讓你失望了。因為臨時出了點事，所以我沒能來見你。

 

此外呢，我們還可以把let down放在一起，用作名詞，letdown，it means an event, performance etc that is not as good as you expected it to be, 表示令人失望的事。

Not getting tickets to the game after my aunt promised them to us is a real letdown.

阿姨答應給我們比賽的票沒給，真是太讓我失望了。

 

I was told my friend Ben was speaking ill of me. That's a real letdown.

有人告訴我我的朋友Ben在背後說我壞話，我太失望了。

 

有時候我們擔心跟朋友約好了見面，他們會不來，所以就會「威脅」他們說：

You will be there tomorrow - you won't let me down, will you?

你明天會來的吧？你不會讓我失望的，對吧？

 

或者你指著別人能幫你的忙，不想中間出什麼變故，你可以說：

I'm relying on your help - please don't let me down.

我指著你的幫助了，可千萬別讓我失望啊。
