Compare這個動詞後面可以接to或者with， 那麼compare to 和compare with是不是可以互換呢？我們來看看它們到底有什麼區別。
Compare to 用來強調兩個不同事物間的相似之處。
麥林韋氏詞典的網頁（http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/compare）上舉了莎氏比亞的一句詩：shall I compare thee to a summer's day? 這裡compare to有"比作"的意思，是用來做比喻的。另外還舉了一個例子：The singer's voice has been compared to that of Elvis. 這句裡雖然不是比喻，但還是「比作」的意思，強調的是兩者的相同。
Compare with 用來將兩個事物間相同的特徵進行比較，看它們是相同還是不同，一般是為了強調兩者的不同。
Sales increased 10% in the summer compared with the previous season.
因此可以看出，compare to 一般用在文學作品中，是為了讓語言更生動，更形象。而在科技寫作中我們比較實驗組和對照組的時候，我們是為了強調兩者之間的差異，無一例外是需要用compare with的。
Compared with mice inoculated with control cells, mice inoculated with YAP-deficient cells had smaller primary tumors and fewer metastatic lesions.
麥林韋氏詞典的網頁上還有這樣兩個例子：
"tall compared to me""easy compared with the last test"這裡有「相對於」的意思，看起來表達這層意思的時候「compare to」 和「compare with」都是可以的。注意這裡tall和easy都沒有用比較級 （taller, easier）。但是這個用法在科技論文中應該不太用得到，因為科技寫作要求準確，我們不會說Rats on the high fat diet are fat compared to rats on the regular diet. 而是會說
Rats on the high fat diet gained significantly more weight than rats on the regular diet.
或者Compared with rats on the regular diet, rats on the high fat diet gained significantly more weight.
所以只要記住科技論文中描述組別之間的差異用compared with就可以了。
其實很多英語母語的作者也會把這兩個詞用錯，已經發表的文章中應該用compare with 而用了compare to的比比皆是，但是這也不表明這兩個詞可以互換使用。至少在標準英語裡還是將它們區分開來的。當然，英語是個不斷變化的語言，有些非常規的用法用的人多了可能變成常規用法，也許將來有一天compare to和compare with之間的界限會越來越模糊甚至消失，我們就可以隨意選擇了。
