1. senior adj. (地位、水平或級別)高的,高級的

常用搭配:

senior high school 高中

a senior officer/manager/lecturer

高級軍官/經理/講師

be senior to sb 比別人年長,比別人職位高;

He is senior to me.

他的職位比我高。

I have ten years' experience at senior management level.

我有十年的高層管理經驗。

He is five years senior to me.

=He is senior to me by five years.他比我大五歲。

 

2. junior adj. 較年幼的,地位較低的,資歷較淺的

              n.低職位人員,青少年運動員

常用搭配:

junior high school 初級中學

a junior doctor 初級醫師

the junior football club 青少年足球俱樂部

be junior to sb. 比某人小/級別低/資歷淺(不與than連用)

My brother is three years junior to me.

我弟弟比我小三歲。

He is junior to several men in the office.

他職位比辦公室裡幾位男性低。

 

3. curious adj. 求知慾強的,好奇的

They were curious to find out who won the game.

他們很想知道究竟誰贏得了比賽。

He was curious to know what happened.

他很想知道發生了什麼事。

Babies are curious about everything around them.

嬰兒對周圍的一切感到好奇。

 

4.impression n. 印象,感想

常用搭配:

first impression 第一印象

leave/make a(n) ... impression (on sb.)

(給某人)留下.的印象

make an impression=make a good impression

留下好印象

What were your first impressions of college?

你對大學的第一印象是什麼?

His words made a strong impression on us.

他的話給我們留下了深刻的印象。

 I was trying to make an impression.

我想要留下一個好印象。

impress v.給……留下深刻的印象,使欽佩;使銘記

impressive adj.給人深刻印象的

常用搭配:

impress sth. on/ upon sb.

使某人銘記/牢記某事

impress sb. with sth. 給某人留下.印象

be impressed by/at/with 對……印象深刻

His sincerity impressed her.

= He impressed her with his sincerity.

他的真誠打動了她。

What really impressed me was their enthusiasm.

=It really impressed me that they were so enthusiastic.

真正令我欽佩的是他們的熱情。

The speaker tried to impress the dangers of drugs on the children.

=The speaker tried to impress on the children how dangerous the drugs can be.

發言人力圖讓孩子們銘記毒品的危害。

 

5. breathe v 吸氣,呼吸

He breathed in the cool ocean air.

他吸入涼爽的海風。

Breathe out as you lift the weight and breathe in as you lower it.

舉起重物時要呼氣,放下時要吸氣。

He breathed deeply before speaking again.

他深吸一口氣,然後繼續說下去。

have bad breath 有口臭

take a deep breath 深深吸一口氣

out of breath 喘不上氣,氣喘籲籲

hold one’s breath屏住呼吸, 閉氣。

6. calm adj . 平靜的;鎮靜的,沉著的

      The high wind passed and the sea was calm again.

      大風過後,大海又平靜了。

      She tried to keep calm about it.

      她盡力冷靜對待這件事。

      vi. 平靜,鎮靜,常用於calm down, 表示「平靜下來」。

      Calm down for a minute and listen to me. 

你安靜一會兒,聽我說。

      vt. 使平靜,使鎮靜,常用於calm sb. down。

      He took a few deep breaths to calm himself down.

      他深深地吸了幾口氣,使自己平靜下來。

      calm down 作不及物動詞短語時,意為「(人)冷靜下來;(風、海等)平靜下來」;作及物動詞短語時,意為「使(人)沉著,使(人)沉住氣」。

 

7. argue vt. & vi. 討論; 辯論; 爭論

argue (with sb.) (about/over sth.) (同某人)辯論(某事)

It is useless trying to argue with him about it.

同他就這件事爭辯是沒有用的。

They are arguing with their classmates about the solution to the problem.

他們正在和同學爭論這個問題的解決方法。

提出理由說明……;爭辯……;主張……

argue that(從句)

We argued that we should be paid more.

我們據理力爭我們應該得到更高的薪水。

argue for/against贊成/反對……

He argued against buying a new computer.

他給出種種理由,反對購買新電腦。

argue sb. into / out of doing sth.

=persuade sb. into / out of doing sth.

=persuade sb. to do / not to do sth.

勸說某人做/不做某事

 

8. apply(1)申請

apply for a job/passport… 申請工作/護照……

apply to sb/sth (for sth) 向……申請……

例句:

To apply for a job, you must fill out a form.

要申請這個工作,你需要填寫表格。

I applied to four universities and was accepted by all of them.

我向四所大學提出申請,都錄取了。

apply sth. to 把.塗/敷在;把.施於;

She applied heavy makeup to her face.

她在臉上濃妝豔抹。

9. schedule n. 時間表,進度表;日程安排

      ahead of/behind schedule 先於/晚於預定時間

      on schedule 按預定時間

Jack has a busy schedule for the next few days.

傑克接下來的幾天日程安排得很緊。

The train was in an hour behind schedule. 

火車晚點一小時到達。

vt.  為某事安排時間

schedule sth for sth

We』ve scheduled the meeting for Monday morning.

我們把會議安排在星期一上午。

be scheduled to do 預定做某事

I’m scheduled to arrive in Shanghai at 5 o』clock tomorrow.

我定於明天5時到達上海。

 

10. struggle v.

① 鬥爭;奮鬥,拼搏,努力

常用表達:

struggle for 為……鬥爭/努力/奮鬥

struggle with/against 與……鬥爭

struggle to do sth.  努力做某事

struggle to one’s feet 掙扎著站起來

例句:

The country is struggling for independence.

這個國家正在為爭取獨立而鬥爭。

Millions of people are struggling for survival.

千千萬萬的人在掙扎中求生存。

He struggled against cancer for two years.

他同癌症抗爭了兩年。

The airline is struggling with high costs.

航空公司正在努力應付高成本。

She’s struggling to bring up a family alone.

她獨自一人吃力地撐著一個家。

例句:I struggled up the hill with the heavy bags.

struggle n. 鬥爭,搏鬥,拼搏,努力

(1) 提到,談及,說起

We agreed never to refer to the matter again.

She always referred to John as 『that nice man』.

(2) 參考,查閱

refer to a dictionary 查詞典

He gave the speech without referring to his notes.

他不看講稿發表了演講。

(3) 涉及,與……相關,指

This paragraph refers to the events of last year.

這一段說的是去年發生的事。

注意: refer 加-ed或-ing時,要雙寫「r」。

2. one by one 逐個地,逐一地,一個接一個地

I went through the items on the list one by one.

3. go all out 全力以赴,竭盡全力

4. in particular 尤其,特別

It was a good concert – I enjoyed the last song in particular.

那是一場不錯的音樂會——我尤其喜歡最後那首歌。

He loves science fiction in particular.

他特別喜愛科幻小說。

Peter was lying on the sofa doing nothing in particular.

彼得躺在沙發上,無所事事。

particular adj. 特定的,特指的; 特殊的,特別的

Their names are listed in no particular order.

他們名字的排列沒有特定的順序。

 

5. look forward to (興奮地)期待,盼望

We're really looking forward to seeing you again.

我們非常盼望能再見到你。

I'm looking forward to my vacation.

我盼望著假期的到來。
