I』d like to talk about the first time I ate meat.

You might be surprised to know that I used to be a vegetarian, 『cause I know I really don’t look like one, but it’s true.(如果你一看就不是吃素的,可以說這句) I hadn’t had any meat in my life until my high school freshman year. You see, my parents are both veggies, they just believe that it’s a much healthier lifestyle. So being raised by them, I was not allowed to eat any meat.

When I was little, the most common food for me is tofu, all kinds of vegetables, mushrooms and things like that. Actually, now I feel kind of lucky that they are not vegans, otherwise, I couldn’t even eat eggs or drink milk.

Anyway, the first time I tasted meat was in the first semester of high school. I was invited to my close friend’s place, and his mom cooked a hearty dinner for us. She made pork chops, Kong Pao chicken, and all kinds of other dishes. At first, I only ate some cabbage and beans, but later, his mom put one pork chop on my plate, well, you know, in China, when elders give you some food, it’s considered impolite not to eat it. I didn’t want to be rude, so I just take a bite, which I have to say, totally blew my mind. It’s something I』d never tasted before, you know, it was a little greasy but also succulent and tender. That meal was out of this world.

That day I took the first step towards eating meat, and now I couldn’t even finish one meal without it.

  2. 第一次吃海膽(sea urchin)的經歷:

I』d like to talk about the first time that I ate sea urchin.

You know, as someone who lives inland, I barely eat seafood, especially when I was little. In my daily life, the most common seafood is freshwater fish, crabs or shrimps. And I have to say, I was never a big fan of them, mostly because of their weird appearance and texture. But one day, my dad took me to a Japanese restaurant with some of his friends, and they ordered a table of sushi and sashimi/raw fish. And there was also a plate of black balls full of spikes, which looked like hedgehogs. My father told me, they are sea urchins, which is a kind of super palatable seafood. I was shocked, 『cause I couldn’t imagine how someone would eat something so ugly. My dad tried to talk me into taking a sip of it, but I just felt disgusted. Later, one of his friends put the last sea urchin in my plate, and gestured that should eat it, well, I would seem impolite if I didn’t eat it, so I summoned up my courage, held my breath, and opened my mouth. The moment I put the sea urchin in my mouth, I was amazed. I mean, it was something I』d never tried before, the texture was smooth and the taste was out of this world.

I ordered another plate to go after dinner.

And every time I go to a Japanese restaurant, sea urchin would definitely on my must-order list.

  3. 第一次吃牛蛙(bullfrog)的經歷:

I still remember the first time that I ate bullfrogs. Actually, my classmates tricked me into eating them. And here’s the story.

Every time I see bullfrogs, they would give me goose bumps because of their skin, which looks outrageously gross. So every time my classmates order them, I would sit far away from the table. My parents even forced me to eat them, 『cause they think bullfrogs are nutritious, therefore, good for my health. But I would cry really hard when they force me to eat them. I don’t even dare to look at them. But once, when we had a class party, the waiter served a big bowl full of peppers, which looked super palatable. I was curious, 『cause I』ve never seen this kind of dish before, so I asked my classmate, what it was. And they told me, they were baby chickens. Well, chickens are my favorite meat, so I ate a lot of them. But on our way back to the dorm, they told me, what I just ate was actually bullfrogs. Suddenly I felt disgusted, and I almost threw up. Now I think about it, I still feel a little sick. But to be honest, I have to admit, they were quite delicious. But I don’t think I』ll eat them ever again.
