2016年12月，浙江西湖高等研究院在浙江杭州成立，致力於開展前沿基礎科學研究和培養以天下為己任的拔尖創新人才。
近日，以西湖高等研究院為前身的西湖大學獲教育部批准設立，這標誌著，社會力量舉辦、國家重點支持的新型高等學校——西湖大學進入全面建設發展的階段。

學校校址位於西湖區，現址（雲棲校區）位於雲棲小鎮石龍山街18 號；主校區（雲谷校區）位於雙橋區塊，將在4月初啟動校區建設。

何許人也？
施一公，1989年畢業於清華大學，1995年在美國約翰霍普金斯大學獲博士學位。中國科學院院士、結構生物學家、清華大學教授 。曾獲第二屆「未來科學大獎」之「生命科學獎」。 現任中國科學技術協會第九屆全國委員會副主席。
