今天我們為大家主要講解的是【8.29 Day 241 |Economist】All at sea 推送中的這段：
But it was not until itpromised that the Grace 1 would not be sent to Syria, or any other forbiddendestination, that Gibraltar agreed to release the vessel.
釋義：但在它承諾「格蕾絲」一號不會被送往敘利亞，或任何其他被禁止的目的地之前，直布羅陀不會同意放行該船隻。
要分析這個句子，我們需要了解強調句型。
強調句型——it is…that/who…。判斷一個句式是不是強調句型，只需要把強調句型拿掉就可以了。如果拿掉之後，整個句子依然完整，那麼就可以確定這是強調句型；否則就不是。
這裡需要注意，句子中有兩個that，不要在去掉的時候弄錯了，前面一個that，也就是promised that的部分，這裡的that是賓語從句的引導詞，後面的that，也就是that Gibraltar的部分才是it is…that…結構中的。
我們把上面這個句子的it is…that…的部分拿掉，整個句子就會變成：
But not until it promised that the Grace 1 would not be sent to Syria, or any other forbidden destination, Gibraltar agreed to re-lease the vessel.
這個句子中：
not until it promised that the Grace 1 would not be sent to Syria, or any other forbidden destination 是時間狀語
Gibraltar agreed to release the vessel 是主句，句子有完整的主謂賓結構
因此，去掉it is…that…之後，這個句子仍然是一個完整的句子，我們可以確定，這是一個含有強調句型的結構。
現在我們來仔細來分析其中的句子結構：
時間狀語從句：
not until it promised that the Grace 1 would not be sent to Syria, or any other forbidden destination
它（伊朗）承諾「格蕾絲」一號不會被送往敘利亞，或任何其他被禁止的目的地之後
it指代的是前文的「伊朗」
句子主幹是：until it promised… 直到它（伊朗）承諾…
賓語從句: that the Grace 1 would not be sent to Syria, or any oth-er forbidden destination
that——起連接從句的作用，在從句中不做成分
the Grace 1——主語，「格蕾絲」一號
would not be sent to——謂語，將不會被送往…
Syria——賓語，敘利亞
or any other forbidden destination——賓語，或任何其他被禁止的目的地
主幹：
Gibraltar agreed to release the vessel
直布羅陀同意放行該船隻
整個句子（不含強調句型）：
But not until it promised that the Grace 1 would not be sent to Syria, or any other forbidden destination, Gibraltar agreed to re-lease the vessel.
但是，它（伊朗）承諾「格蕾絲」一號不會被送往敘利亞，或任何其他被禁止的目的地之後， 直布羅陀會同意放行該船隻。
not until的結構在中文表達中，習慣說成「直到…才…」，所以我們也可以說：
但是，直到它（伊朗）承諾「格蕾絲」一號不會被送往敘利亞，或任何其他被禁止的目的地， 直布羅陀才會同意放行該船隻。
not until的結構其實是一種否定的轉移，not的否定意義可以在翻譯的時候轉移到主句上。關於until的翻譯技巧：
do A until B，意思就是：在B發生之前，A這件事情需要一直做；也就是，等到B發生以後，就不需要做A了
而not until的結構只是反過來了：
not until B，do A，意思句式；在B發生以後，做A；在B發生以前，不要做A。其實就是：not do A until B。
在上面這個句子中：
not until it promised that the Grace 1 would not be sent to Syria, or any other forbidden destination, Gibraltar agreed to release the vessel.

當承諾…以後，同意…
在承諾…之前，不會同意…
整個句子（含有強調句型）：
But it was not until it promised that the Grace 1 would not be sent to Syria, or any other forbidden destination, that Gibraltar agreed to release the vessel.
強調句型只需要我們翻譯出強調的意味就可以了。不需要拘束在「正是…」這種固定的強調的表達方式。其實not until本身就已經含有強調的意味了。這裡我們分享幾種翻譯的思路：
1. 但在它承諾「格蕾絲」一號不會被送往敘利亞，或任何其他被禁止的目的地之前，直布羅陀不會同意放行該船隻。
2. 但是除非它承諾「格蕾絲」一號不會被送往敘利亞，或任何其他被禁止的目的地之前，否則直布羅陀不會同意放行該船隻。
3. 但是，它（伊朗）承諾「格蕾絲」一號不會被送往敘利亞，或任何其他被禁止的目的地之後，直布羅陀才會同意放行該船隻。
4. 但是，直到它（伊朗）承諾「格蕾絲」一號不會被送往敘利亞，或任何其他被禁止的目的地， 直布羅陀才會同意放行該船隻。
另外，跳開這個句子，我們還應該學會not until的結構。前面我們說not until本身就已經含有強調的意味了，是因為實際上not until放在句首的時候是需要倒裝的，這種倒裝句式本身就是一種強調。只是在強調句型之下，就不倒裝了，即：強調不倒裝，倒裝不強調。
但如果想要用not until的倒裝結構應該怎麼轉換句式呢？
當not until放在句首的時候，我們需要用的倒裝結構：
not until+從句/短語+助動詞+主句主語+主句謂語。
這個結構下我們需要注意，使用倒裝結構的是主句，而不是until後面的從句。
然後我們來not until的結構重新改寫一下上面的句子：
But not until it promised that the Grace 1 would not be sent to Syria, or any other forbidden destination, did Gibraltar agree to release the vessel.
所以從這個句子中我們應該可以積累三種表達句式：
1. until句式：
Gibraltar did not agree to release the vessel until it promised that the Grace 1 would not be sent to Syria, or any other forbidden destination
2. not until句式：
Not until it promised that the Grace 1 would not be sent to Syria, or any other forbidden destination, did Gibraltar agree to release the vessel.
3. 強調句式：
It was not until it promised that the Grace 1 would not be sent to Syria, or any other forbidden destination, that Gibraltar agreed to release the vessel.
