Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic given below. You are given the first sentence of each paragraph.Your composition should be at least 160 words.

On Retirement

1.Since work is a very important part of life, retirement can be difficult for the senior citizens.

2.Retirement can bring many problems for the retired.

3.Now our society is beginning to be concerned

about the needs of its senior citizens.

On Retirement

Since work is a very important part of life, retirement can be difficult for the senior citizens①. Work is not only important for economic benefits, but also for social and psychological② needs. Leaving one job is a difficult change. Many of the retired feel lost without their jobs.

Retirement can bring many problems for the retired. Retirement gives one a feeling of uselessness. Such a psychological problem often brings physical③ problems. It is the feeling of emptiness④ that gradually kills the retired. With retirement there will be a decrease in income. Unless they plan carefully, the retired will get into economic problems.

Now our society is beginning to be concerned about the needs of its senior citizens. The government is taking steps to ease the problem of limited incomes. Free medical care⑤ and welfare⑥ are offered for the retired. The society provides services to help with the housework of the retired. Besides, various kinds of clubs⑦ or associations⑧ have been set up. They help the retired to make new friends and develop new interests such as gardening, collecting, sports, etc., so that the retired can find new meaning and satisfaction of life.
