The Impact of Commercial Awareness

on Higher Education

There exists a popular saying in our materialistic① society that success is measured in terms of money. It seems that the more money you earn, the more successful you are. And the popularity of this belief has seriously influenced our higher education.

The Ivory Tower②, therefore, is no longer what it used to be: Courses are established in favor of applied subjects while theoretical subjects can only find themselves in a tight corner of the curriculum. Fewer and fewer students acquire knowledge only for its own sake③. They tend to choose those majors that will lead to larger and full wage pockets. More and more teachers are obsessed with④ the idea of making more money. Tempted by higher salaries and better working conditions, many of them would rather abandon the teaching career, which has resulted in the so-called brain drain⑤. All of these indicate that our education is increasingly money-oriented rather than academy-oriented.

Needless to say, the impact of money on higher school education is far-reaching. Social development depends on science and technology, which in turn requires all kinds of professionals and their dedication. The money-orientation will eventually hinder⑥ the social progress. In order to keep balance of all aspects, we definitely must not go too far in any one of them.
