There are lots of ways to express what weneed in English. But humans aren't the onlythings that have needs: Objects do too!

When we want to express what an objectneeds, we often use the phrase "somethingneeds doing." Some examples from our dailylives might include "the laundry needs doing," "the dishes need washing," or the "bed needsmaking."

We can see a slightly more advanced use ofthis phrase in our dialogue: The envelopeneeds pushing. This is just a play on thephrase "push the envelope" and in fitting withthe theme of our lesson sounds a bit like abuzzword!
