9月20日，國家主席習近平強調，要把人民政協制度堅持好、把人民政協事業發展好，提高政治協商、民主監督、參政議政水平。習近平強調，人民政協是中國共產黨領導各民主黨派、無黨派人士、人民團體和各族各界人士在政治制度上進行的偉大創造。President Xi Jinping on Friday stressed upholding the system of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), and improving the CPPCC work of political consultation, democratic oversight, and participation in and deliberation of state affairs. Xi noted that the CPPCC is a great creation on the political system by the CPC and all other political parties, personages without party affiliation, people's organizations, and the people of all ethnic groups and all walks of life under the leadership of the CPC.

1949年9月21日，新中國成立前夕，600多位來自全國各方面的代表參加了中國人民政治協商會議第一屆全體會議。中國共產黨領導的多黨合作和政治協商制度由此確立。中國人民政治協商會議（簡稱「人民政協」），是中國人民愛國統一戰線的組織，是中國共產黨領導的多黨合作和政治協商的重要機構。人民政協由中國共產黨、各民主黨派、無黨派民主人士、人民團體、各民族和各界的代表，臺灣同胞、港澳同胞和歸國僑胞的代表以及特別邀請的人士組成。人民政協的主要職能是政治協商和民主監督，組織參加政協的各黨派、團體和各族各界人士參政議政。政治協商是對國家和地方的大政方針以及政治、經濟、文化和社會生活中的重要問題在決策之前進行協商和就決策執行過程中的重要問題進行協商。
