單詞語法:depend

1.depend是不及物動詞，後面應接介詞on或upon。

All living things depend on the sun for their growth.萬物生長靠太陽。

He depends on his pen for a living.他靠寫作為生。

2.下面一句中的upon不可省略。

He is not to be depend upon.他不可信賴。

不可說：He is not to be depended.

3.在depend on[upon]後的複合結構中可用動詞不定式。

He depend on[upon]us to help him.他依靠我們幫助他。

The old man depended o his daughter to keep house.那位老人靠他女兒管理家務。

You can depend on it to be cold this winter.你等著瞧，今年冬天天氣一定很冷。

不可說：He depended us to help him.

4.下面兩句話都可以說。

We can depend on[upon] his arriving here on time.

We can depend on[upon] him arriving here on time.

這兩句都意為「我們可以相信他會準時到來。」

5.depend on[upon]後不可直接跟that從句，但加上it後可接that從句。

You can depend on[upon] it that I shall be there tomorrow morning.你放心，我明天早上將到那裡。

You may depend upon it that we shall never surrender.你放心好了，我們絕不會屈服。

不可說：You can depend on [upon] that I shall be there tomorrow morning.

6.depend on [upon] 後接whether，what，where，how等引導的從句時，如果主語是it，則on或upon可以省略。

It depend (on) what you think of it.這要看你怎麼想了。

It depend (on) whether he can justify himself.這要看他能否自圓其說了。

It depend (on) how things go.這取決於情況的發展。

比較：That depends on [upon] whether I』ll have enough time.這要看我是否有足夠的時間。

7.depend通常不用於進行時，單作「懸而未決」解時卻常用於進行時。

The matter is depending.事情尚未解決。

The suit is still depending.這件訴訟案仍然懸而未決。
