and
and在英語語法中叫做coordinating conjunction，意思是引導主語從句的連詞。簡單來說，在"I ate a cheeseburger and I drank a glass of juice"中，"I ate a cheeseburger"和"I drank a glass of juice"都是主句（語義重要性相同）。（在這句話中因為兩個主句的主語相同，都是I，所以可以省略第二個主語，變成"I ate a cheeseburger and drank a glass of juice"。如果主語和動詞都一樣，那麼它們在第二個主句裡都可以省略。比如"I ate a cheeseburger and some chips"。寫這兩句是為了和後面做對比。）

英語裡一共只有7個coordinating conjunction，首字母縮寫是FANBOYS，它們分別是：for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so。subordinating conjunction則很多，比如before, after, if, unless, because, 它們引導的是從句（語義地位沒有主語重要）。
as well as
as well as不是一個連詞（conjunction），所以它既不引導主語也不引導從句。語法上它起的是介詞的功能，也就是後面要跟名詞短語，或者動名詞短語。
因此"I ate a cheeseburger and drank a glass of juice"不能改寫成"I ate a cheeseburger as well as drank a glass of juice"。而應該是"I ate a cheeseburger as well as drinking a glass of juice" (意為：我不僅喝了一杯果汁，還吃了一個芝士漢堡）。而"I ate a cheeseburger and some chips"中的and可以換成as well as，因為後面的"some chips"是名詞短語。但語義上會發生變化。"I ate a cheeseburger as well as some chips"意為"我不僅吃了一些薯條，還吃了一個芝士漢堡"。
