1. Argumentative Essay是什麼?
Argumentative Essay是一種理論性很強的Essay形式, 中文譯為論證性論文, 簡稱議論文.
Argumentative Essay的目的就是為了傳達作者對於一件事情的立場及個人態度. 通過對於論文主題的評價, 作者需要提出論文陳述, 提供真實可靠的論據來證明自己的論點.
Argumentative Essay Format有三種, 分別是Classical Argument, Toulmin『s Argument, Rogerian Argument.
2. Argumentative Essay怎麼寫?
在討論怎麼寫一篇Argumentative Essay之前, 我們需要先了解一下什麼是Five-Paragraph Argumentative Essay. Five-Paragraph Argumentative Essay是我們經常可以聽到的五段式議論文, 想要寫出一篇令人滿意的五段式英語論文可不是一件簡單的事情. 我們先從五段式論文的提綱開始, 幫助我們寫出更好的五段式論文.
顧名思義, 五段式論文有五個段落, 每一個段落的分布如下.
▶ Paragraph 1: 足夠抓人眼球的Introduction和一個覆蓋論文重點的Thesis statement.
▶ Paragraph 2: 觀點1和三個支持論據.
▶ Paragraph 3: 觀點2和三個支持論據.
▶ Paragraph 4: 觀點3和三個支持論據.
▶ Paragraph 5: 總結, 與Thesis statement以及論據相照應.
Step 1: 確定論文主題一般來說, 老師在留論文時會給你論文的Topic, 對此我們建議你的Introduction要遵循老師所給的Topic. 在寫一整篇論文時也要注意時刻遵守老師所給的Topic.
Step 2: 確定你的立場你需要在這個論文主題中找到你的立場, 當你確定你的立場以後, 你要從各種渠道上, 例如學校圖書館的資料庫或者網絡上的資料找到足夠的論據支撐你的觀點. 在寫論文之前務必有你的立場, 否則一篇論文就難以繼續寫作.
Step 3: 寫出清晰的Thesis statement什麼叫做清晰的Thesis statement呢? 我們可以在寫Thesis statement的過程中用更加有力且明確的句子. 例如, 我們可以在句子中使用should這個詞. 比如, 「Thesis statement should use clear word」, 類似的句子可以更加有力度.
Step 4: 給每個Thesis提供三個論點我們需要給你的Thesis提供三個論點來支撐Thesis, 比如我們要說明五段式論文是一種不好的寫作格式. 那麼我們就需要提出三個論點,
▷ 論點1 – 五段式論文是基礎的寫作格式;
▷ 論點2 – 有更多的論文寫作格式比五段式更加有思考性和創造性;
▷ 論點3 – 五段式論文不允許出現分析式的思考, 寫作者必須遵循這一固有格式。
Step 5: 給每一個論點提供三個論據我們拿對於上文的論點1做例子. 論點1說明五段式論文是基礎的寫作格式, 那麼我們就需要三點論據.
▷ 論據1 – 芝加哥的老師雷·薩拉扎說：「五段式論文很簡陋, 毫無意義, 而且毫無用處.」
▷ 論據2 – 長灘加利福尼亞州立大學的Elizabeth Guzik說: 「五段文章鼓勵學生只在表面水平上接觸, 而不達到大學寫作所要求的程度. 「
▷ 論據3 – 根據《教育周刊》的一篇文章, 「大學寫作教授們有一個共識, 那就是『學生們來大學時準備好做五段式的主題和論點, 但在分析性思維方面根本沒有準備. 」
值得注意的是, 在Five-Paragraph Argumentative Essay的寫作中, 你的論點最好有三個論據, 所以文章中往往有三個論點和九個論據.
Step 6: 擴展Outline首先, 用一個hook來引出Introduction部分, 當你確定了Thesis和你的論點論據之後, 你便可以開始拓展你的論文Outline框架了. 一個hook就相當於是整體文章的聲明, 鼓勵讀文章的讀者繼續讀下去, 來尋找為什麼提出這一論點的原因.
Step 7: 擴展結尾段在擴展了Outline之後, 擴展結尾段就變得相對容易了. 對於擴展結尾段, 需要注意的是, 不要使用與前文的Thesis重複的詞句來概括. 需要在與前文不同的詞的情況下還可以與前文相照應.
