Ms. Fan Xiaochun, from Shanghai, is a PhD student in the philosophy department of Tongji University, and a visiting PhD student at Humboldt University in Berlin. Previously she was engaged in documentary work in Shanghai and New York. Her project plan will study the mutual interpretation of Chinese and German thinkers and creators in the context of modernity. The advancement of civilization always involves exchange, borrowing and cross-pollination between different cultures. The project will use Benjamin's "Deutsche Menschen" as a structural blueprint, and draw out the constellations of spiritual interaction between China and Germany recorded inarchives and letters. By tracing these lines back through history, this project seeks a path towards future dialogue between civilizations.
