比較「only+現在分詞（短語）」和「only+不定式（短語）」：這兩個結構在句中都可以用來表示結果。但有區別：後接現在分詞往往表示一種自然的合乎邏輯的結果，而後接不定式往往表示一種出乎意料的或令人失望的結果。如：

He went out of the room with few clothes on, only feeling rather cold. 他出去時衣穿得很少，漸漸地感到有些冷了。

I arrived at the shop only to find I'd left all my money at home. 我到商店卻發現錢全放在家裡。

He lifted a rock only to drop it on his own feet. 他搬起石頭砸了自己的腳。

I arrived at the shop only to find I'd left all my money at home. 我到商店卻發現錢全落在家了。

His opposition served only to strengthen our resolve. 他一反對反而增強了我們的決心。

She ran to the station only to find that the train had left. 她跑到火車站，但火車卻開走了。
