fairly，pretty，rather和quite這些用來修飾形容詞，副詞和動詞的詞彙，起的作用是強化語氣。
它們都有「相當地」的意思，尤其是pretty，rather和quite有時可以互換著用。

01 fairly
修飾形容詞或副詞
We'll have to leave fairly soon.
我們得很快離開。（但不是要馬上走）
That seems like fairly sound advice.
這似乎是挺合理的建議。（不見得有多好）
He seems fairly content with life.
他似乎對生活相當滿意。
fairly語氣最弱，往往削弱了被修飾詞：
所以最好不要說：
Your son is fairly clever.
（家長會不高興哦。）
fairly還可以表示「公平地」
You have not dealt fairly with me.
你對我不公平。
fairly修飾動詞，「簡直，竟然」
Her suggestion fairly took me by surprise.
她的建議使我大吃一驚。
02pretty
修飾形容詞或副詞
頗;相當;十分;非常;極;很
I'm pretty sure he'll say yes.
我很肯定他會答應的。
It was a pretty stupid thing to do.
這是一件相當愚蠢的事。
Jerry's pretty self-conscious about his weight.
傑瑞對自己的體重相當介意。
pretty還可以做形容詞，「漂亮的;動人的」
She is by no means pretty.
她一點也不漂亮。
03quite
修飾形容詞，副詞或動詞
頗;相當;某種程度上;完全;十分;非常;在很大程度上;很;的確
It is quite obvious that he is lying.
很明顯他在撒謊。
He got quite emotional during the speech.
他在演講中情緒激動。
Sales have slowed down quite markedly.
銷售明顯放緩。
quite可以放在不定冠詞a/an前：
It was quite a nice day.
今天天氣真好。
I have quite a good relationship with my parents.
我和父母關係很好。
04rather
相當，在某種程度上
She was rather/quite hurt by his unkind words.
他那刻薄的話使她很傷心。
She asked some rather/quite awkward questions.
她問了一些相當尷尬的問題。
rather和quite區別不大，但是：
1，rather常用於「表示輕微的批評、失望或驚訝」
「How was the film?」 「Rather good- I was surprised」
「電影怎麼樣？」「很好看-我很驚訝」
Who's the rather large lady in the hat?
戴帽子的那個大塊頭女人是誰？
2，(與動詞連用是減弱語氣的)有點兒，稍微
I rather like gardening.
我比較喜歡園藝。
3，美式英語中，rather不常用。
05注意：
這類強化詞不容易區別，真的「相當地」好的話，為什麼不用「非常」來表達: really, very和extremely等？
這些強化詞在口頭和非正式英語裡很普遍，但在書面語裡不算好的詞彙，所以在正式文本，或考試作文裡最好用其它表示具體程度的詞代替它們。
