很多次的經驗告訴我們，英語中很多拼寫或拼音差不多的，意思基本上都差很多，比如 bare 和 bear，material 和 materiel，complement 和 compliment 等等，principal 和 principle 也不例外。所以想像一下，如果只知道其中的一個單詞，那麼在聽力的時候就容易陷進去，費解和費時間。
一、principal 作形容詞，意為「最重要的，主要的」，例如：
The principal reason for the failure to take action was poor communication between government departments.
未能採取行動的主要原因是政府部門之間溝通不暢。
The principal objective is to make a profit.
主要目標是盈利。
The inspector highlighted my principal concern in his opening sentence.
檢查員在開場白中強調了我的主要關切。
principal 作名詞，意為「大學校長，學院院長」，主要用於美國英語，例如：
The college principal made a speech congratulating all the students who were graduating in that year.
大學校長發表講話祝賀當年所有即將畢業的學生。
二、principle 是名詞，意為「原則，原理，行為準則，規範」等，例如：
No! It is against my principles!
不！這違反了我的原則！
That is a great idea in principle.
原則上這是個好主意。
The scientific principles behind even the most complicated computer are relatively simple.
即使是最複雜的計算機背後的科學原理也相對簡單。
She refuses to allow her family to help her as a matter of principle .
她不要家人幫忙，對她來說這是個原則問題。
He seems to have no principles at all, and is only interested in money.
他似乎一點原則都沒有，只對錢感興趣。
There are three fundamental principles of teamwork.
團隊合作有三個基本原則。
記憶方法：principal 後面的 pal 是「朋友，夥伴」的意思，而朋友之間沒有太多的原則或規範，所以 principal 沒有原則，原理的意思，那麼 principle 就是原理的意思。
這兩個單詞發音一樣，所以在聽力的時候，要根據上下文來判斷是哪個，不過現在放心了，詞庫裡已經有它們了，在聽力的時候結合具體的上下文進行匹配。
