老外說「make water」是什麼意思?做水?燒水?都不是!

看到「make water」

可能大家第一反應是「做水」？

然後聯想到燒水、蒸餾水……

咳咳咳……不好意思都不對！

而且~

如果你在正式場合隨隨便便說出這個短語

周圍氣氛可能會變得很微妙！

「make water」其實是英語口語中「小便、尿尿」的一種表達方式

例句：

He walked far into the woods to make water.

他走了很遠的路到了樹林裡小便。

Catch you later. I have to make water.

等會兒見，我得尿尿去。

英語口語中「小便」有很多種表達方式

非正式場合中

除了「make water」，還有：

（非正式，小朋友用的比較多）

例：

I need to take a pee. 

我需要去小便。

例：

Mom always asks me to help my little brother go number one. 

媽媽總是讓我幫弟弟去小便。

例：

（通常是男生用）

（女生可以用這個表達）

正式場合中

如果需要去「小便」，可以這樣表達：

去補補妝

（這是最優雅隱晦的說法，女生一定要學起來）

例：

Excuse me, I need to powder my nose.

抱歉，我需要去補補妝。

make one's mouth water 的意思是：

使人饞的流口水，垂涎三尺

這個俚語還可以表達為：

with one's mouth watering.

而「make one's stomach turn」的意思是「讓人反胃」

例：

The smell of that fresh bread is making my mouth water.

這新鮮麵包的味道叫我垂涎三尺啊！

The roast duck that restaurant serves is my favorite dish. Every time I think about it, it makes my mouth water.

hold water不能直譯成「控制住水」

而是指「合乎邏輯，有說服力，合情合理的」

That excuse simply doesn't hold water.

那個藉口根本站不住腳。

water under the bridge 的意思是：

已經過去了，無關緊要了

例：

Don't worry about that mistake, it's water under the bridge.

別擔心這個錯誤，它已經無關緊要了。

My sister and I fought when we were children, but that's water under the bridge.

小時候姐姐和我經常打架，不過那都是往事了。
