Bio:

Xin (Eric) Wang is joining UC Santa Cruz as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering this Summer. He obtained his Ph.D. at UC Santa Barbara and B.Eng. at Zhejiang University, both in Computer Science. His research interests include Natural Language Processing, Computer Vision, and Machine Learning, with an emphasis on building embodied AI agents that can communicate with humans using natural language to perform real-world tasks. He published over 20 papers at top-tier CV, NLP, and ML venues such as CVPR, ICCV, ECCV, ACL, NAACL, EMNLP, AAAI, TPAMI. He received the CVPR Best Student Paper Award in 2019. 

Xin is also professionally active and has organized multiple academic events on the topic of his research, including workshops at ACL 2020, CVPR 2020, and ICCV 2019, and a tutorial at AACL-IJCNLP 2020.  He served as Area Chair for EMNLP 2020 and Session Chair for AAAI 2019. He worked at Google AI, Facebook AI Research, Microsoft Research, and Adobe Research, and has built wide collaboration with many industrial research labs.

Why UCSC

Location wise, UCSC's proximity to Silicon Valley (around 30-min driving) and satellite campus there, make industrial collaborations, startups, exchange of ideas, and internships very easy. UCSC has one of the most beautiful and unique campuses in the world (YouTube video | bilibili video) and perfect weather year-round. Santa Cruz is also a wonderful place for outdoor activities such as hiking, surfing, diving, kayaking, and golfing.
