Tashi Norbu is an nine-year-old boy from Bhutan. He became interested in photography when he saw a group of older children in his community taking photography lessons offered by a foreigner. He told his mom that he wants to be a photographer when he grows up.
「Skills such as creativity, critical thinking and coordinating with others will be crucial for a jobseeker in Year 2020.」 World Economic Forum Report for 2020 Future Jobs
And photography training can sharpen the skill sets needed for a future job seeker. This knowledge motivated Quin, a Chartered Accountant from Hong Kong, to start the first photography workshop for kids in Bhutan in November 2015.
Now, you may think, how did a Chartered Accountant from the busy city of Hong Kong end up in Bhutan and teach photography to kids like Tashi? The answer lies in Tashi's Mom.
Meet Tashi's mom,Thukthen.
She is a true artisan, a 「rainbow」 weaver from the Himalayas who steadfastly preserves the heritage art of weaving in Bhutan. She is one of the artisans of ANA by KARMA, an enterprise established in 2014 by Quin with a mission to revitalise the heritage art of weaving by empowering artisan weavers like Thukthen to become business women. As the enterprise relied 100% on social media marketing, good quality photographs are always needed. Photography classes were initially held for the artisans, with their spouse or older children to be translators. But very quickly, Quin realised that it was the children of the weavers that were the fastest learners, and serious ones too. This realisation, plus the knowledge that photography training can sharpen skill sets needed for these kids to secure their future jobs, Quin mooted the Bhutan Kids Photography workshops.
Since the first class in November 2015, 40 kids have participated in Kids Photography Workshops, which is made up of a three-day workshop in Bhutan and followed by 6 months of continuous learning support, both online and offline. Computers with wi-fi services are made available to the kids on a sharing basis to ensure a smooth and continuous learning journey for them.
Whilst learning a new skill not taught in schools, the additional benefits as shared by the parents are that the children have become more focused and disciplined. Tashi’s mom who describes her nine year old son as a 「non-stop moving」 and 「noisy」 boy; observed that whenever he has a camera in his hands, Tashi transforms into this professional photographer who can focus for long periods, becomes thoughtful yet stays curious and creative.
Given the success of the photography workshops, we would like to provide Photography Workshops for more children. Our aim with this crowdfunding campaign is to raise USD6,000 in order for 60 kids to attend workshops in the next 12 months.
And the best thing is…. when you support our campagin, you are also ensuring the mothers of this children are on the path to become business women too.
