芭蕾舞劇《紅色娘子軍》首演於1964年。這是一部在中國40年來久演不衰的經典舞劇。故事發生在二十世紀三十年代的中國海南島。舞劇講述了從惡霸南霸天府中逃出來的丫鬟瓊花，在紅軍黨代表洪常青的幫助下，從一名苦大仇深的農村姑娘，逐漸轉變成一名有著堅定共產主義信念的娘子軍戰士的過程。
故事發生在十年內戰時期的海南島。
序幕 夜——惡霸地主南霸天的土牢
貧農女兒瓊花被綁吊在柱子上，狗腿子老四奉命將她賣掉。瓊花仇恨滿腔，踢倒老四，奪命而逃。
第一場 深夜——漆黑的椰林
瓊花逃出匪巢不久，即被追來的惡奴捉捕，被打得遍體鱗傷，昏死過去。剎時暴雨傾盆，南霸天料瓊花已死，遂與奴僕倉皇而去。紅軍幹部洪常青與通信員小龐化裝偵察，途經椰林，救起瓊花，問明身世後，指引瓊花投奔紅區。
第二場 幾天後的上午—紅色根據地廣場
晴空萬裡，彩旗飄揚，軍民共同慶祝紅色娘子軍連的成立。
瓊花歷盡艱辛趕到會場，受到熱烈的歡迎和親切的關懷。她憤怒地控訴了南霸天的滔天罪行，激起軍民怒火萬丈。娘子軍黨代表洪常青以瓊花的世代怨仇教育廣大軍民。瓊花隨即加入娘子軍，並由連長授槍。
第三場 黃昏——南霸天的庭院
趁南霸天慶壽，洪常青喬裝為歸國華僑巨商，深入虎穴，約定午夜鳴槍為號，與娘子軍裡應外合，殲滅南賊。入夜，瓊花悄悄進入匪巢與小龐聯絡。一見南霸天，瓊花抑制不住滿腔怒火，擅自開槍，過早地暴露了戰鬥信號。南霸天得以從地洞潛逃，洪常青堅定果斷，沉著指揮，與戰友齊攻匪巢，紅軍開倉分糧，貧苦的眾鄉親慶祝解放，一片歡騰景象。瓊花違反紀律，打亂了作戰部署，洪常青對她進行語重心長的勸導。
第四場 清晨——紅軍宿營地
洪常青給娘子軍上政治課，教育戰士們加強組織紀律性。經過洪常青的教誨，瓊花豁然開朗，決心為解放全國人民而戰鬥。鄉親們採荔枝，編鬥笠慰問紅軍，軍民團結一家親。
突接命令，傳來炮聲，南匪已進犯解放區。戰士、擔架隊告別親人，滿懷勝利信心踏上徵程。
第五場 黎明前——山口陣地
為殲滅敵人後援，紅軍主力部隊迅速轉移，插入敵軍後方。洪常青率阻擊排戰士，臨守山口，英勇奮戰，阻擊敵人。任務完成後，常青掩護戰友撤離陣地，不幸身負重傷，昏迷被俘。洪常青甦醒後，毅然挺立，怒視群匪。
過場 紅軍主力以排山倒海之勢，奮勇前進，追殲匪軍。
第六場 黃昏——南霸天的後院
紅軍主力節節勝利，步步逼進南賊老巢。南霸天驚恐萬狀，垂死掙扎，妄想威逼洪常青投降。洪常青怒斥南賊，斷然拒絕，大義凜然，英勇就義，盡顯其大無畏的英雄氣概。
幾經艱苦，紅軍解放了椰林寨，殲滅了南霸天。瓊花接任了黨代表職務，廣大群眾紛紛參加紅軍，戰鬥的歌聲響徹雲霄。

TheRed Detachment of Women
Synopsis– A heroic legend happened on Hainan Island during the TenYears Civil War
Prelude:in a dungeon of a local despot Nan Batian(Lord of the South); at night
A poor peasant’s daughter Qionghua is bound to a pillar, when Nan’s lackey Lao Si comes in with his order to sell heraway. With her heart filled with enmity, Qionghua kicks Lao Si to the groundand runs for her freedom.
SceneOne: in the pitch-dark coconut woods; late in the night.
Qionghua gets captured by the minions of Nanshortly after her escape. She is beaten black and blue into a comma. A heavy rain pours down all of a sudden.Believing Qionghua already dead, Nan Batian flees in haste with his minions.
The Red Army cadre Hong Changqing and the messenger Xiao Pang pass bythe coconut woods in disguise for a scout mission. They find Qionghua and bringher back to consciousness. Acknowledged her bitter sufferings, they encourageher to go to the Red Zone.
SceneTwo: at the Square in the Red Zone; in the morning, a few days later
Colorful flags fly under the boundless blue sky, as the soldiers andthe people are celebrating the founding of the Red Detachment of Women.
Upon her arrival after overcoming all kinds of difficulties, Qionghuais warmly received with solicitous concern. She indignantly condemns the despotfor his towering crimes, which evoke the great wrath of the soldiers and thepeople. The PartyRepresentative of the Detachment, Hong Changqing educates the soldiers and thepeople with the bitter experience of Qionghua’s family. Qionghua joins the Red Detachment, and is presented a rifle byher Company Officer.
SceneThree: in the despot’s court yard; dusk
Disguising as a rich Chinese overseas businessman, Hong Changqing attends Nan Batian’sbirthday feast. He has planned to fire a shot at midnight as a signal for theRed Detachment to join in and wipe out the bandits.
As night falls, Qionghua sneaks into the enemy’s den to get in contactwith Xiao Pang. Running into Nan Batian accidentally, she cannot suppress herrage and shoots at the despot, which lets off the combat signal too soon andenable Nan Batian to flee via a underground tunnel. Yet Hong Changqing remainscalm and led the detachment to overrun the enemy’s den.
The Red Army opens the barn and distributes the food to the people. Thepoor rural folks celebrates their liberation in jubilation.
Qionghua has compromised the operation plan because of her violation ofthe discipline. Hong Changqing gives her serious yet sincere persuasions.
SceneFour: at the Camp of the Red Army; early in the morning
Hong Changqinglectures the Red Detachment of Women on politics. He reminds them of going forbetter discipline. Qionghua is enlightened and is determined to fight for theliberation of the whole community.
Rural folks picklychees and make bamboo hats for the Red Army as a sign of appreciation. TheArmy and the people are like one big happy family.
An order isreceived and a cannon fire is heard. Rogues of Nan Batian are attacking theliberated area. Filled with confidence in victory, everyone hurries out to do hisone bit to conquer the enemy.
SceneFive – on the position at a mountain pass; before dawn
To cut the enemyfrom help, the main forces of the Red Army shift quickly to the back of theenemy camp. Hong Changqing is in the lead to guard the mountain pass and counterthe enemy.
When giving coverfor his comrades to leave the base, he sustains injuries. He is knockedunconscious and captured. On coming to consciousness, he stares at the enemy indefiance.
Interlude
The Red Army movesforward to destroy the enemy in full swing.
SceneSix – in the backyard of Nan Batian, at dusk
Getting the upperhand in the combat, the Red Army closes in the den of the enemy. Now in fearand trepidation, Nan Batian makes a final effort to fight back. He tries toforce Hong Changqing surrender. Gallantly, Hong refuses at the cost of hislife.
A colorful rainbowis seen after dark clouds are cleared. The Red Army succeeds in liberating thecoconut field and Nan Batian is killed. Qionghua takes up the post of the PartyRepresentative in honor. The whole community joins the Red Army and the soundof their combat songs are heard everywhere.
