Among Japanese ceramic artists who interpret the 「incompletion, haze and depth」 to the extreme, Kazunori Ohnaka can be regarded as one of the best. His works make the newcomers shocked. They use pottery as mould, yet present a rust-like temperament: hard, fragile, stubborn, honest, dark and subtle, like the shimmer from abyss, emitting a simple but profound, timeless charm.
Born in 1971 in the southwestern county of Yamaguchi Prefecture, Kazunori Ohnaka began to study ceramics at the age of 29, and thus digged into it. His creation is relatively slow, and requirements for his works are harsh and detailed. He dismisses them with little dissatisfaction and never compromises. Many of his works are inspired by Japanese antique props and religious artworks, thus presenting an ancient sense of age.
His works are not everyday utensils. They bring a sense of ceremony. For instance, the tea ware showed in this exhibition present the legitimism, primitive simplicity and deterrence of Japanese tea ceremony. Kazunori Ohnaka has been frequently contact with Chinese tea ceremony in recent years, and created quite reputable Chinese tea ware. These works retain the spirit of Japanese wabi-sabi, and meet the needs of Chinese customers in terms of functionality.
The utensils are static artworks, etherealize without losing the character, which are the existence that ignites silence in daily life. In addition to the tea ware, Kazunori Ohnaka’s flower vessels, sculptures and pottery paintings are also exceptional works, with the silent, boundless and unadorned form, lead people passing through history, entering into ancient times, wandering between rough and delicate, expericencing wonders and fissions.
This exhibition will show 200 pieces of Kazunori Ohnaka’s latest tea ware works, including teapot, katakuchi(片口), tea jar, pot saucer, flower vessel, portrait sculpture, pottery painting, etc. We also invited Japanese tea artist Fuji Bana to our exhibition on the first day. She will present these works with the form of 「Tea ceremony in a Gallery」, interpret the collision and fusion between new and old.
