At 9:00 a.m. on December 22, Beijing time, the Chicago – China Getaway Cities Partnership Online Seminar (2020中芝機制線上工作會) held successfully through Zoom platform. The webinar was co-hosted by Chicago Municipal Government, World Business Chicago (WBC) and China Investment Promotion Agency of Chinese Ministry of Commerce (CIPA). Ms. He Weichen, Vice President of Invest Shanghai, participated in the online seminar to represent Shanghai government.
Year 2020 is the 7th year of the China-Chicago cooperation mechanism. This online seminar summarized the outcomes of China-Chicago bilateral investment and trade cooperation in 2020, with an outlook for the upcoming 2021. In the opening remarks, Kyle Schulz, Executive Vice President of Business Development and Global Strategy at WBC pointed out in the speech that China and Chicago had been good trading partner for years, and shared some recent initiatives in Chicago, hoping a further future bilateral cooperation. Thomas Bartkoski, Director of International Business Development at WBC briefly introduced the mission of WBC as well as some advantages Chicago has. China is Illinois' second-largest trading partner and has two sister cities, Shanghai and Shenyang. He also introduced Chicago’s Recovery Task Force, including five key industries. In the speech, he expressed the hope that relations between governments of China and America would return to normal and thanked Chinese cities for their support.
On Shanghai side, Ms. He Weichen mentioned the city of Chicago and Shanghai became sister cities 35 years ago, the two great cities have engaged in a wide range of economic, political and cultural communications, and the bond between the two cities have been notably strengthened. She shared a set of data to show the resilience of the economy in Shanghai and the achievements of the 3rd CIIE had been made; then she pointed out that Shanghai would further create a new highland of opening up with more accurate and powerful policy supply and high-quality services. Under the current situation, the host of this webinar showed that the U.S. local governments and industries had confidence in the prospects of bilateral economic and trade cooperation for the next year. Ms. He Weichen expressed that Invest Shanghai was also willing to actively cooperate with WBC to jointly promote economic and trade cooperation and exchanges between the two cities.
Mr. Yang, Vice Chariman of Shenyang Commerce Bureau and Ms. China, Department Head of Qingdao Commerce Bureau also shared the experiences and initiatives of foreign direct investment from the two cities. Finally, Ms. Yang Zhuo, Director of International Liaison from CIPA concluded the webinar with an outlook for further collaboration between Chinese cities and Chicago under the framework of 「Chicago – China Getaway Cities Partnership」.
