「Muu2!」 is an original work by the famous Spanish theatre Yllana. It tells the story of four clown-like matadors going through bullfight training, preparing for the bullfight and going on stage to bullfight. The name of the work is taken after the noise made by bulls – 「moo」.
With every "moo" sound made, the four matadors all react very differently. The team leader (played by Jony Elias) shows heroism, while attempting to infect his teammates with his passion and hoping to encourage them to fight the bull bravely. He decides that the bull is the huge beast that must be conquered. The other three matadors somewhat display unusual reactions: one is extremely frightened, one seems irrationally calm, while the forth matador would flee and hide himself immediately at the sound of the 「moo」.
The four actors in the play, with their wonderful comic faces, exaggerated facial expressions and body language, would make you want to stay with their silliness. In addition, the play is interspersed with an eclectic choice of music from rock, pop, classical, to the blockbuster "Mission Impossible」 theme song, played up a good atmosphere and helps narrate the story.
As the saying goes, music is without borders, and with the actors' superb performance, they don't need words. Since the play’s debut 27 years ago, it has been touring around the globe for 20 years and won numerous awards. This year, Muu2! is coming to Guangzhou for the first time to meet with the audience.
The audience when watching the show would be impressed by the lead matador's heroic wit while seeing the actors unfold in front of us, funnily, the typical moral matador but also the violence that this sport may entail.
Bullfighting originated in Spain and is a traditional Spanish sport. The red and yellow colors on the Spanish flag are from the bullfight. Red represents the blood of the matador, and yellow is the color of the soil in the bullfight stadium.
Not long ago, I had an interview with the Spanish Consul General in Guangzhou Mr. Marcos Gomez. He said, 「although bullfighting is the traditional Spanish sports, but currently is also the center of controversy in Spain. 」 It is true, many people believe that bullfighting is too violent and bloody, and involves deliberate harm to animals. In some northern regions of Spain, including Galicia and Catalonia, bullfighting is banned. But bullfighting is still popular in the central and southern regions of Spain.
This causes us to wonder: what would be the central theme that 「Muu2!」 wants to convey? Do they want the audience to love the thrill of bullfighting? Or, against it?
With this question in mind, I interviewed Jony Elias, one of the lead actors in the play. Jony told me that, 「Muu2!」 does not deliberately oppose, or supports bullfighting in Spain. It is more about sharing important elements in the Spanish culture, delivering humor and fun and presenting caricatures in the Spanish life.
I couldn't agree more!
For example, the Spaniards usually give us the feeling of gentleman-like, while in communicating with others, they could be affectionate showing exaggerated body language and facial expressions. On the other hand, the Spaniards are accustomed to making fun of themselves and self-deprecating. When watching this drama, the audience would not only feel the matador’s passion and dedication for bullfighting, but also enjoy the traditional Spanish music and dance.
Besides, there are two parts in the play where actors would walk off stage and interact with the audience. Children absolutely would love these segments!
Apart from making us laugh non-stop, Muu2! play also helps us experience a huge piece of Spanish culture.
So, at the end of the play, whether or not you feel like supporting bullfighting, you would for sure be mesmerized by the excellent performance of the 4 clown-like matadors and laugh in good conscience. After laughing so hard and rolling in the isles, it would seem that all your troubles in life have vanished without trace.
