The fact that Game of Thrones is hugely popular should come as a shock to no one since the release of the seventh season of this fantasy drama television series on July 16, 2017.
But ways of watching the show may vary from person to person. Some choose to space each episode out over the course of the ensuing weeks; while others prefer to be much more patient and wait till the end of this season so that they could enjoy binge-watching — the purest way to watch a great series.
Binge-watching, also called marathon-viewing, is the practice of watching television, usually a single series, for several straight hours. As an observed cultural phenomenon, binge-watching has become popular with the rise of online media services.
More than half of British adults watch more than one episode of the same show back-to-back at least once a month, new research suggests.
However, binge-watching has long been a topic under debate. Many will relish getting lost for hours on end in these shows. But others might feel guilty about the thrilling, draining marathon of being glued to their laptops or TV screens.
Get it over quickly
One of the big advantages of binge-watching TV shows is that you get it over and done with quickly. Without worrying about missing any episode because of work or chores, you can simply put a Sunday in reserve for 10 episodes.
Also, when you watch a show in real time it takes weeks to see if it is something that you are going to love. If you find out that it's not really your thing, it's more annoying because you've spent so much time figuring it out. Being able to make this decision quickly saves you time in the long run and helps you find quality shows to watch.
Psychological escape from stresses
Perhaps one of the greatest benefits binge-watching can offer is psychological escape from daily stresses. Any activity that relieves stress is positive and has many positive long and short-term benefits, according to the American Psychology Association, and watching episodic shows let you escape and get immersed in a story. Psychologists say this isn't much different than getting lost in a novel for hours, which is considered a good thing in our society.
Bad for physical and mental health
Excessive TV watching has long been associated with health problems. Scientific studies have shown that prolonged television viewing increases the risk of obesity and related diseases such as diabetes.
It's also been linked to mental health problems like depression. And according to a survey on Guardian, binge-watching is tied to feelings of loneliness and depression. They also found that those who binge-watch lacked the self-regulation to stop, suggesting that binge-watching may be an addictive behavior.
Student problems
TV binge-watching is a pandemic that has afflicted many of the nation's college students, with so many video sites readily at their disposal. They disappear into their dorm rooms for a few days at a time and then appear in the classroom exhausted.
Anti-social effect
Binge-watching is an inherently anti-social activity. While you CAN do it with someone else, that involves coordinating schedules and adjusting the time and place to enjoy the show. So binge-watchers normally just lock their door, cave and watch episodes without the other person, eating takeaway food and staring at a screen without interruption.
So it has been warned that binge-watching erodes the "social value" of television as there are fewer opportunities to anticipate future episodes and discuss them with friends.
Are you a binge-watcher? What is your favorite TV series?
