Hello and welcome to The English We Speak, I’m Feifei…
大家好,歡迎收聽地道英語,我是菲菲……
… and I’m Neil. Hey Feifei, it sounds like you might have a cold?
……我是尼爾。嗨菲菲,聽上去你好像感冒了呢?
I think I have – sore throat, blocked nose. I feel terrible. That’s why I’m taking this medicine.
我想是的——嗓子疼,鼻子不通氣。我感覺糟糕極了。這就是我為啥要吃藥。
That’s probably a good idea. Medicine is usually good for making you feel better but how does it taste?
這也許是個好主意。藥物通常會讓你感覺好一點,但是它嘗起來怎麼樣啊?
Well, it’s supposed to taste of strawberries but to be honest it’s just horrible!
嗯,本應該是草莓味的,但實話說,嘗起來真的太糟糕了!
That’s why I never take the stuff – it’s disgusting. Have you heard the phrase 』a taste of your own medicine』?
這就是我為啥從來不吃這東西——太噁心了。你聽過「以其人之道,還治其人之身」這個說法嗎?
No. Does it mean doing something horrible or unpleasant?
沒有。是不是表示做一些討厭的或是讓人不愉快的事情?
Sort of. It describes someone receiving the same, treatment or unpleasant experience that they have given to someone else. You know, like you’re always bossing people around and then someone starts to boss you around?
有幾分這個意思。它描述的是某人受到他曾給過別人的同樣對待,或是不愉快經歷。你知道的,就像你總是對別人頤指氣使,然後別人也開始對你頤指氣使了。
I don’t know what you mean Neil! Anyway, it’s quite a negative phrase.
我不知道你是什麼意思尼爾!總之,這是一個相當負面的表達。
It is. Let’s hear some examples…
對。讓我們來聽一些例子吧……
Our boss is so rude to us but finally somebody has answered back and now he’s got a taste of his own medicine.
我們老闆對我們太粗魯無禮了,但最終也有人這麼對他了,現在他嘗到了以其人之道,還治其人之身的滋味。
When I meet up with my boyfriend, he’s always late so this time I’m going to give him a taste of his own medicine and turn up late as well.
當我和我男朋友碰面的時候,他總是遲到,所以這次我打算以其人之道,還治其人之身,我也要遲到。
Deepak is always rude to the teacher but he was really offended when she gave him a taste of his own medicine and was rude back to him!
迪帕克總是對老師很無禮,但當老師以其人之道還治其人之身,也粗魯對他的時候,他真的很生氣。
So that’s 』a taste of your own medicine』 which describes someone receiving the same treatment that they have given to somebody else. Excuse me!
所以這就是「以其人之道,還治其人之身」,描述的是某人受到了他曾給過別人的相同待遇。抱歉!
Oh dear. It sounds like you need to take some more medicine.
噢親愛的。聽上去你還要再吃些藥啊。
If you mean literally taking the medicine, then yes. But if you mean receiving the same treatment I』ve given to someone else, then no. I can’t believe you think I am always bossing people around.
如果你是說字面意義上的吃藥,那確實是這樣的。但如果你的意思是受到我曾給過別人的相同待遇,那可不對。我不相信你認為我總是對別人頤指氣使。
I was just giving an example of the phrase. I would never say you were bossy.
我只是用這個短語舉個例子而已。我永遠不會說你這個人專橫的。
Good. Now why don’t you go and make me a nice up of tea?
好。你現在為什麼不去給我泡一杯好茶呢?
Oh, OK, yes sure. See you.
噢,好的,會的。再見。
And don’t forget to close the door!
別忘了把門關上!
Yes. Sorry, I』ll do that right now. OK, see you later.
好。抱歉,我馬上就關。再見。
Ah, I feel better already. Bye.
啊,我已經感覺好多了。再見。
