不知不覺，又到了一年一度「你媽喊你穿秋褲」的時候了。
那麼請問：你知道秋褲英文怎樣說嗎？
理論上，秋褲歸於內衣underwear的一種，可是跟咱們往常了解的underwear又不太相同——大眾了解的underwear通常指的是無袖內衣或短褲。
而風行我大中華的秋衣秋褲，都是長袖或包腿長褲。假如用underwear好像不太精確。到底哪個單詞才是秋褲？
本來，關於成套的秋衣秋褲，英語裡有用thermal underwear（保暖內衣），還有一個對比長遠的一個姓名就long john。
Thermal underwear算是在功能上解說了，還相對容易了解，可是long john是啥東東？
Long咱們都簡單了解，長款的麼？可是這個john是啥鬼？好像跟衣服半毛錢聯繫都沒！可是人家就是用這個詞了。
維基百科上對long john是這麼說的：
Long underwear, also called long johns or thermal underwear, is a style of two-piece underwear with long legs and long sleeves that is normally worn during cold weather.
長款內衣，也叫long johns或thermal underwear，是一種上下兩件的帶有長褲腿和長袖的內衣，通常在冰冷時節穿。
所以long john即是秋衣秋褲的意思，假如要單指秋褲，可以說成long john pants/bottoms。
而女人穿的保暖秋褲，則更喜愛用thermal leggings這個詞。
話題回到這個john到底是怎樣和秋褲聯繫上的？
據維基百科，2004年，英國詞源學家Michael Quinion就long john的來歷特意發布了一篇文章。
他以為，long john這個詞被廣為所知，還要歸因於二戰時期美國給戰士發放的保暖內衣，當時用的即是long john這個詞。
該詞首次被提及是在1943年的一份出版物上，而Quinion找到了更早的描繪———1941年，10月16日，宣布於威斯康辛州Sheboygan Press上的一封新兵家書：
We have had but three days of rain in the nine weeks we have been here. Last Friday it turned a little cool so we were issued our winter clothes. We all hope we don't get our 'long Johns' for a while because it is too warm yet.
「我們到這9個星期以來，只下了三天雨。可是，上星期五，氣候開始轉涼，部隊發了冬裝。咱們期望別太早穿long johns，由於現在還太熱。」
而為啥用john來命名秋褲？他給出的答案是這樣的：
他找到了1944年6月3日在威斯康辛州一份報紙上的文章（Wisconsin Rapids Daily Tribune），文中好像給出了john的典故。
Many a rookie has been ridiculed and laughed at the first time he swallowed his pride and donned his LONG JOHNS. 很多新兵在放下自負，第一次穿上戎行發的long johns後，都會遭到周圍人的嘲諷和嘲笑。
They are the winter underwear issued by theArmy, and have the disturbing effect of making a G.I. look like a trapeze artist. 這long johns即是戎行裡發放的過冬衣服，可是它有一個煩人的負面作用，即是讓戰士看上去像個空中飛人表演者相同。
It might be added that they itch but good! 還有一點，這種衣服穿戴很癢，不過的確不錯！
After a soldier finally gets into his LONGJOHNS, he invariably swells his chest, flexes his biceps and struts around the barracks like a John L. Sullivan, after whom these practical if not sightly garments have been named.
戰士套上秋衣秋褲後，老是會挺起胸膛，鼓起肱二頭肌，像John L. Sullivan（19世紀晚期的一名重量級拳擊手，常在拳擊場上穿一款白色長襯褲）一樣在軍營裡高視闊步地走來走去，所以大家就用這位拳擊手的姓名來命名這種有用但不太好看的衣服。
