荊棘和黑刺莓叢封堵住了谷口;
THE COMBE
The Combe was ever dark, ancient and dark.
Its mouth is stopped with bramble, thorn,and briar;
And no one scrambles over the sliding chalk
By beech and yew and perishing juniper
Down the half precipices of its sides, withroots
And rabbit holes for steps. The sun ofWinter,
The moon of Summer, and all the singingbirds
Except the missel-thrush that lovesjuniper,
Are quite shut out. But far more ancientand dark
The Combe looks since they killed thebadger there,
Dug him out and gave him to the hounds,
That most ancient Briton of English beasts.
THE CHERRY TREES
The cherry trees bend over and areshedding,
On the old road where all that passed aredead,
Their petals, strewing the grass as for awedding
This early May morn when there is none towed.
我餓著肚子下山,但還不至於餓死;
THE OWL
Downhill I came, hungry, and yet notstarved;
Cold, yet had heat within me that was proof
Against the North wind; tired, yet so thatrest
Had seemed the sweetest thing under a roof.
Then at the inn I had food, fire, and rest,
Knowing how hungry, cold, and tired was I.
All of the night was quite barred outexcept
An owl’s cry, a most melancholy cry
Shaken out long and clear upon the hill,
No merry note, nor cause of merriment,
But one telling me plain what I escaped
And others could not, that night, as in Iwent.
And salted was my food, and my repose,
Salted and sobered, too, by the bird’s voice
Speaking for all who lay under the stars,
Soldiers and poor, unable to rejoice.
SWEDES
They have taken the gable from the roof ofclay
On the long swede pile. They have let inthe sun
To the white and gold and purple of curledfronds
Unsunned. It is a sight moretender-gorgeous
At the wood-corner where Winter moans anddrips
Than when, in the Valley of the Tombs ofKings,
A boy crawls down into a Pharaoh's tomb
And, first of Christian men, beholds themummy,
God and monkey, chariot and throne andvase,
Blue pottery, alabaster, and gold.
But dreamless long-dead Amen-hotep lies.
This is a dream of Winter, sweet as Spring.
AFTER RAIN
The rain of a night and a day and a night
Stops at the light
Of this pale choked day. The peering sun
Sees what has been done.
The road under the trees has a border new
Of purple hue
Inside the border of bright thin grass:
For all that has
Been left by November of leaves is torn
From hazel and thorn
And the greater trees. Throughout the copse
No dead leaf drops
On grey grass, green moss, burnt-orangefern,
At the wind's return:
The leaflets out of the ash-tree shed
Are thinly spread
In the road, like little black fish, inlaid,
As if they played.
What hangs from the myriad branches downthere
So hard and bare
Is twelve yellow apples lovely to see
On one crab-tree.
And on each twig of every tree in the dell
Uncountable
Crystals both dark and bright of the rain
That begins again.
