At this, Shockley smiled, but when he looked from Clinton to Mae, his high brow furrowed again. 「John, it’s fruitless and cruel to waste your time explaining electronics to those who lack the intellectual power to understand it. Now this boy may possibly do so. Orientals are a remarkably intelligent race. But the girl...」
聽到這裡，肖克利露出微笑，但當他交替看著柯林頓和梅，他的眉頭再度皺了起來。「約翰，你這是對牛彈琴，浪費時間跟這些智力不足以理解電子的人講解電子，對他們也是種折磨。這個男孩子可能還可以聽懂。東方人是非常聰明的人種。但這女孩…」
「Hey,」 Clinton said. He placed himself between Mae and the physicist. 「Mae is the smartest kid in our class, practically in the whole school. You take that back!」

Shockley looked at him sideways. 「Indeed. Let me apply a small diagnostic.」 He peered around Clinton into Mae’s eyes. 「A simple problem. Sixty-three basketball teams are playing single elimination for the championship. One team, of course, gets a by, in the rst round. How many games are played in all?」

Clinton fell back, sending anxious glances back and forth between Mae and Shockley. 「Thirty-two, no ...thirty-one games in the rst round,」 he whispered way too loudly. 「A by means that team doesn’t have to play.」
柯林頓向後退了退，眼神緊張地在梅和肖克利間來回遊移。「三十二，不對… 第一回合要打三十一場。」要說是自言自語，他也太大聲了點。「落單的一隊不用出賽.」
Mae signaled for him to hush. Shockley was calling her dumb, and not just her, but everyone of her race. For a moment the insult paralyzed her, but she got hold of herself and thought back to last spring’s season. Eight teams in the school volleyball nals, she thought. And they played... seven games. Of course! She made her voice at, almost bored, as if the question were way too easy. 「Someone loses every game,」 she said. 「And every team but the winning team loses exactly once. So sixty-three teams play sixty-two games.」
梅示意要他安靜。肖克利說她笨，不只有她，所有女性。有那麼一刻這樣的屈辱讓她目瞪口呆，但是她定住神，回想去年春天的球季。學校排球決賽有八隊參賽，她想。他們打了…七場。當然！她保持聲音的平靜，幾乎是略帶無聊的口吻，好像問題太過簡單。「每一場球賽都有人輸球 ，」她說，「除了冠軍那隊，每隊都正好輸掉一場球。所以六十三隊一共打了六十二場球賽。」
