英語詞彙辨析:in the south,on the south,to the south

這三個片語的意義各不相同。
In the south的意思是「在南部」，指在某地區之內。例：
This plant grows in the south of Africa.
這種植物生長在非洲的南部。
Guangzhou is in the south of China.
廣州在中國的南部。
On the south的意思是「在南邊」、「與南邊接近」。例：
Bolivia is bounded on the north and east by Brazil，on the south by Argentina and Paraguay，and on the west by Peru and Chile.
玻利維亞的北邊和東邊與巴西接壤，南邊與阿根廷和巴拉圭接壤，西邊與秘魯和智利接壤。
從例句可見，介詞on可以表達「與…接壤」和「沿…」的意義。下面兩例可以進一步說明on的使用場合：

I have been to many countries on the Pacific.
我到過許多太平洋沿岸的國家。
To the south的意思是「在南面」、「向南面」，指在某地區之外。例：
The garden lies to the south of the house.
花園是在房子的南面。
Kowloon is less than an hour's dirve to the south of Shenzhen.
九龍在深圳南面不足一小時車程之遠。
The magnetic needle points to the south.
磁針指向南面。
通過上列例句的比較，我們可以舉一反三，聯想到in，on和to the east(west，north)的差異和意義了。
順便在此指出，south和southern的比較級是more southern。最高級是 southmost和southernmost;north和northern亦然。值得注意的是，east和west有所不同。它們的原級是 east(eastern)，west(western)，比較級是more eastern和more western，最高級只有一種形式，即easternmost和westernmost，不能寫作eastmost和westrmost。
