牛頓蘋果是科學家神話裡相對而言最不扯淡的一個了……相對而言。
首先，沒有任何證據表明他被蘋果砸到過。說真的，被蘋果砸到很疼的。尤其是沒有矮化果樹的17世紀。沒砸出事兒來就不錯了，要是反而砸出靈感那就真有點匪夷所思。
但是，牛頓本人常常對朋友說，他是在1666年看到一個蘋果的落下，想「為什麼蘋果是下落而非向上」，產生了引力的靈感。
很多牛頓的熟人，如William Stukeley和John Conduitt，在牛頓的晚年時期寫的文章裡都提到了此事（雖然那已經是蘋果事件的50年之後）。（而且這個故事流傳開來主要靠的是伏爾泰的三手轉述。）
不過另一些人（Henry Pemberton和William Whiston）深入地「採訪」過牛頓，問了很多引力起源的話題，卻對蘋果隻字未提……
牛頓自己寫的書裡也沒有提過。
William Stukeley的手稿，記錄了 1726年他和牛頓的一次對話。完整的手稿可以在皇家學會網站 http://www.royalsociety.org/turning-the-pages 看到。
轉錄英文如下（粗體是我加的）：
... We went into the garden, & drank tea under the shade of some appletrees, only he, & myself. amidst other discourse, he told me, he was just in the same situation, as when formerly, the notion of gravitation came into his mind. "why should that apple always descend perpendicularly to the ground," thought he to him self: occasion'd by the fall of an apple, as he sat in a comtemplative mood: "why should it not go sideways, or upwards? but constantly to the earths centre? assuredly, the reason is, that the earth draws it. there must be a drawing power in matter. & the sum of the drawing power in the matter of the earth must be in the earths centre, not in any side of the earth. therefore dos this apple fall perpendicularly, or toward the centre. if matter thus draws matter; it must be in proportion of its quantity. therefore the apple draws the earth, as well as the earth draws the apple."
不過，牛頓本人這個信源可靠嗎？
這件事情牛頓在自己的書裡隻字未提。1726年牛頓已經83歲了（次年他就掛了），蘋果事件發生在整整60年前。如果這個故事確實就是這樣發生的，他為啥不早講給別人聽呢。
從他的手稿來看，他已經確信重力的存在了。當時在考慮的問題不是蘋果為何下墜，而是重力是否能外推到月球這樣地外的物體。
再說，關於蘋果為什麼下落而非向上的問題，又不是沒人問過，亞里斯多德兩千年前就給出過一個解答了（雖然是錯誤的……）
所以可能性比較大的猜測是，牛頓也許真的見到了蘋果落地，但是蘋果的作用在他晚年」講故事「的時候，被誇大了。我們給別人講故事的時候也會有意無意戲劇化一些細節，何況牛頓一個八十歲老人講的是他一生中最輝煌的發現之一呢。
但還有一種更加陰暗的猜測。
牛頓和胡克關係很不好。原因很多，但主要是因為某些觀點是誰先想到的。譬如牛頓提出引力理論後，胡克宣稱他早就想到了二次方反比的觀點，只是沒能拿出適用於橢圓軌道的數學公式。牛頓經常陷入這種爭端裡。
事實真相如何可能已經無法知道了，因為那時候科學家之間經常通信，很多東西不是寫在發表的期刊裡，如果有什麼觀點確實是不知不覺這麼傳過來的，也難以考證。
但牛頓是個記仇的人，這些對手死了之後他也不肯放過……所以他編出（或者誇大）這個蘋果故事，可能是想說：這個理論是我瘟疫期間與世隔絕的時候自己想出來的，和你們都沒有關係。他用這個故事遮蔽了二十年的勞動和相互溝通，免得再被人搶優先權。
當然這個是純猜測了。
