GlobalFoundries宣布，位於美國紐約州薩拉託加縣盧瑟森林科技園區的Fab 2晶圓廠今天如期正式破土動工，AMD籌劃了長達三年多的夙願也終於開始變成現實。

Fab 2晶圓廠項目於本月初得到最終批准，建設和裝備總投資42億美元，包括8億美元左右的當地建設費用，預計耗時大約兩年完工，佔地總面積222.45英畝(90萬平方米)，其中建築總面積1327420平方英尺(12.3萬平方米)，包括晶圓廠88.3萬平方英尺(8.2萬平方米)、辦公室22萬平方英尺(2.2萬平方米)、綠化帶9.98萬平方英尺(9000平方米)。

工廠建設期間需要500萬個工時，會直接提供1600個新的工作崗位，以及另外2700個相關的就業機會；全面啟動後提供1400個新的半導體製造業崗位，個人平均年薪6萬美元(年度所有員工總薪水8800萬美元)，並帶動其它5000個相關就業機會。

按照規劃，新工廠在建設完成後還要再經過12-18個月才能達到全負荷運行狀態，也就是2012年開始批量生產300毫米晶圓，製造工藝上初期採用28nm，隨後很快升級到22nm。(參看相關進度表)

為了支持AMD/GlobalFoundries的建廠工程，紐約州政府保證提供最多12億美元的財政補貼，這也是該州歷史上規模最大的一次公私投資。

GlobalFoundries宣稱，Fab 2建成後將成為世界上技術最先進的半導體工廠，以及美國境內最大規模的尖端晶圓廠，並為當地帶來大量直接和間接就業機會。

GlobalFoundries還表示，在價值2000億美元的全球半導體行業內，晶圓代工服務的重心在過去幾十年裡一直位於亞洲，而Fab 2新工廠和位於德國德勒斯登的Fab 1將聯合首次組建全球範圍的半導體製造網絡。

GlobalFoundries將主要為AMD代工處理器晶片，還有其它一些產品(顯卡?)，同時也會積極尋求其它客戶。最近有傳聞稱GlobalFoundries已經和NVIDIA達成合作協議，將為後者代工GPU晶片。GlobalFoundries發言人稱將在未來幾周內宣布一些客戶方面的消息，但目前無法披露任何具體名字。
