If everything proceeds smoothly, around 2 kilograms of stone and soil will be collected and packed in a vacuum metal container inside the ascender. The entire mission is scheduled to last approximately 23 days, according to the China National Space Administration.

If the Chang'e 5 mission ends successfully, it will become China's first space activity to retrieve extraterrestrial substances and make China the third nation to successfully bring back lunar samples after the United States and the former Soviet Union.
