雙重所有格是什麼

所謂「雙重所有格（double genitive）」，是指名詞所有格或名詞性物主代詞同of構成的所有格，即「of＋名詞所有格」。雙重所有格有這樣一個特徵：

「of＋名詞所有格」中的名詞必須表示人，不能表示事物。因此，我們可以說：a play ofShakespeare's（莎士比亞的一個戲劇）， a friend of my wife's（我妻子的一個朋友），但卻不能說a funnel of the ship's或 a leg of a table's，而且該名詞必須是特指的，不能是泛指的。比如我們可以說，a friend of the doctor's（這位醫生的一個朋友），a novel of the writer's（那位作者的一部小說），而不能說a friend of a doctor's或 a novel of a writer's。
