Understanding the organic features of human motor skills
THE LIBM AT A GLANCE
TOPICS AND MAIN AIMS
Vascular and Red Blood Cell Biology: Understanding the mechanisms underlying vascular and blood disorders in certain hemoglobinopathies and atherosclerosis and showing the potential positive effects of exercise on these pathologies.
Muscle deconditioning and reconditioning: Identifying the processes that elicit muscle alterations, developing methods of prevention and investigating the potential effect of exercise on the recovery of muscular abilities.
Mental and sensorimotor processes: Understanding their role in motor performance, rehabilitation of motor function, and injury prevention. Role of motor imagery, of sensorimotor plasticity, and of interactions between cognition and sensorimotor postural control.
Human/material and human/environment interactions: Identifying organic adaptations under severe constraints, originating from physiological (environment), mechanical (equipment) or neurophysiological constraints (information processing, motor control).
Musculoskeletal system, performance, pathology and prevention: Understanding the biomechanical and neuromuscular determinants of motor performance, investigating deficiencies and pathologies of the musculoskeletal system, preventing injuries, and the supposed benefits of physical activity for health.

SPECIFIC FIELDS
The LIBM conducts research that incorporates the following tags: physical activity and sport, health, performance and prevention.
Our three main objectives are to:
1. Understand and model the effects of physical activity on organic functions. This is a line of theoretical research, common to all five key/central themes, which will lead to applied research in the fields of health and / or motor performance.
2. Investigate and prevent pathologies caused by physical activity. Physical activity, whether practiced for the purpose of athletic performance or not, is likely to induce several pathologies which can impair the health and / or integrity of persons. The aim is to more effectively prevent the onset of these pathologies by identifying their harmful effects and advocating best practice and caution.
3. Study the potentially positive effects of physical activity on health and quality of life. The objective is to study the benefits of physical activity on pathologies that are not induced by physical activity itself. On the contrary, physical activity can enable a patient to improve his health. Therefore, physical activity can play an important role in disease prevention and therapy, whether individuals are healthy or suffering from diverse pathologies.
