2019年洞穴潛水前輩Steve在臉書上宣布自己掛蹼以後,把自己的裝備也賣了。雖然真的不再下水,但是他在臉書上還繼續與潛水員分享自己關於潛水的經驗體會。這些前輩的經驗對於我們這些後輩來說是非常重要的,雖然也就幾百個字,但那是多少年的總結。所以我們真的需要認真聽聽前輩們是怎麼說的,每一個字都不是廢話。
下面我就摘幾段他在臉書上的帖子。

Cave Diving is often portrayed as the World's most dangerous sport.
Personally I do not regard cave diving as either a sport or as being particularly dangerous.
洞穴潛水被認為是世界上最危險的運動
我個人並不認為洞穴潛水是一項運動,也不十分危險
Of course there are inherent dangers involved in diving into a submerged cave, but for the most part it is a pretty stable environment.
當然潛入水下洞穴是有內在危險的,但大部分洞穴都是十分穩定的環境
Those dangers can be mitigated and controlled to a large degree by the diver, so I regard cave diving more as a controlled risk activity.
大部分的風險很大程度上都能被潛水員減輕和控制,所以洞穴潛水更多的是一項風險可控的運動
I would like to add the obvious caveat at this point, that cave diving without proper training, equipment or preparation is tantamount to suicide, those stupid enough to do so fully deserve their Darwin Award when they kill themselves.
說到這點我想警告的是,洞穴潛水如果沒有充分的訓練、合適的裝備和足夠的準備,就相當於在自殺,愚蠢到這種程度的人當他們自殺時,完全值得一個達爾文獎。
I am not saying that hazards beyond the cave divers control do not exist, obviously they do, but in my opinion the biggest threat to the cave diver is not danger from the external environment, but rather their internal response to stressful situations.
我並不是說那些潛水員無法控制的危險不存在,很顯然它們確實存在。在我看來,洞穴潛水員最大的威脅不是來自外在的環境,而是面對壓力的內在反應。
It is critical that Cave Divers learn how to manage fear in general and also how to control fear in specific situations.
關鍵是洞穴潛水員如何在一般情況下管理恐懼,以及如何在在特殊情況下控制恐懼
The key to managing fear in general is by increasing your comfort zone, which can be thought of like a protective bubble, that surrounds you.That bubble can be pushed in different directions to gradually make it bigger.
一般來說,管理恐懼的關鍵就是擴大你的舒適區。這種舒適區有點像一個包圍著你的保護罩,它可以背推向不同的方向,逐漸地擴大。
Over time small incremental changes add up so that what may have seemed crazy a few years ago now falls into the realm of your expanded comfort zone.
隨著時間的推移,微小的增量變化會累積起來,讓幾年前看起來很瘋狂的事情,現在就進入到你擴大的舒適區。
This is experience, there are no shortcuts to gaining experience, it is not something that can be taught, no one can give it to you, it just requires that you spend lots of time underwater in the cave.
這就是經驗,沒有捷徑可以獲得經驗,這不是可以教的東西,沒有人可以給你,它只需要你花很多時間待在水下洞穴裡。
The key to dealing with fear when confronted by a specific problem in a stressful situation is to break the problem down into parts and then work methodically on each part until the problem is successfully resolved.
在緊張情況下面對特定問題時,處理恐懼的關鍵將問題劃分為幾個部分,然後有條不紊地處理問題,直到每個問題都成功解決。
This mental focus allows you to remain comfortable and in control in what many people would consider extreme life threatening situations.
這種精神聚焦允許你保留在舒適區,又在極端威脅生命的情況下有所控制。
Obviously this may require some physical skill but mostly it is mental discipline. That is why I have always considered cave diving to be 90% mental and 10% physical.
很顯然這要求一定的身體技能,但更多時候是心理訓練。這就是為什麼我總是認為洞穴潛水要求90%的心理訓練和10%的身體技能。
Your cave diving journey should be thought of as a marathon not a sprint, exercise mental discipline, build up your experience gradually and learn to control your mind so that when confronted with a problem fear does not control you.
你的洞穴潛水之旅應該被看作是一場馬拉松,而不是短跑。訓練你的心理紀律,逐漸累積經驗,學習控制大腦,這樣當問題來臨時,恐懼就不會控制你。
