A household in Jiading District has been busted for raising wild animals, Jiangqiao Town urban management and law enforcement officials said.
A hedgehog, two hamsters and 19 chinchillas were found at an apartment in Jiangqiao Town after urban management and law enforcement officials made an inspection following neighbor complaints.
Nearby residents complained that the animals may spread disease and asked authorities to intervene, officials said on Thursday.
More than 40 cages were also found at the house, officials said.
The animals were seized by officials. The apartment was rented and the tenant of the house was reprimanded.
Hedgehogs are a key protected species in Shanghai and their sale and rearing are illegal, officials said.
Rectification of the matter has concluded and further investigation is underway, officials said.
