1. go out of one's way（刻意）
講解：
如果順道（on the way)去辦件事情，並不會添太多麻煩。可是如果一件事情你覺得很重要，那麼就算不順道，也要更改行程，特地跑一趟，這就是go out of one’s way的原意。引申為「刻意地、不辭辛苦地去做」。
例句：

2. put the cart before the horse（本末倒置）
講解：
馬應該套在車子（cart)的前面。如果反過來，把車子放 在馬前面，就會甘步難行。put the cart before the horse就表示這種「本末倒置」的情形，也可以寫成cart-before-the-horse的複合字，當作形容詞用。

part是「部分」，parce丨除了「包裹」的意思外，原本也可以解釋為「部分」。part和parcel兩個字連用，彼此又押「頭韻」(alliteration，以相同的子音開頭），是以「反覆」的修辭法來加強語氣，表示「不可分割的一部分」、「完全屬於其中的東西」。

4. alter ego（另一個自我，替身，代表）
講解：
alter ego是拉丁文詞組，譯成英文就是other self，也就是「另一個自我」。它可以表示一個人兩種不同的面貌，不過通常表示某人和另一個人在某些方面極為相像，甚至可以作為替身或全權代表。
例句：
The Secretary [Warren Christopher] will be traveling a great deal in the coming months，says a senior aide，「so he needs someone here who can manage the other big issues，who can really serve as alter ego.(出自：TIME, Nov. 22，1993，p. 48 )

5. belt tightening（緊縮預算，省吃儉用）
講解：
belt tightening字面上的意思是「勒緊褲帶」，也就是「預作吃不飽的打算，準備咬牙苦撐」的意思。
