Huangshan is worth visiting all year round. And you won't regret to visit it in any season.
Spring — Rape flower of Sankou Town
Summer — Pine and sea of cloud of the Yellow Mountains
Autumn — Chrysanthemum blossoms and red leaves of the Yellow Mountains
Winter — Frost flowers and rime, sea of clouds
Highlights — The Four Wonders
Outstanding natural beauty is Huangshan's number one feature. The Yellow Mountains' classic attractions are known as its "Four Natural Wonders": the imaginatively-named pines, oddly-shaped rocks, seas of cloud, and hot springs.
Imaginatively-Named Pines迎客松
Yellow Mountain pines are particularly hardy, seeming to twist directly out of the smooth rock. Many old pines have been named according to their appearance or some legend about them.
Greeting Guest Pine is the most famous pine in the Yellow Mountains, and doubtless in all of China. The 10-meter (33 ft) high tree grows like a man standing by the path and stretching out his hand to guests in a greeting gesture. Many Chinese hang a poster of Greeting Guest Pine in their living rooms and restaurants as a decoration.
Oddly-Shaped Rocks
Likewise the oddly-shaped rocks of the Yellow Mountains get their names not only from appearance, but also from legend. Each rock's name has a story, which gives the rock life.
Flying-Over Rock is one of the most famous boulders in the Yellow Mountains. The 12-meter- (39-ft-) high rock tilts on a huge rock ledge. The contact area is very small which makes it more amazing.
Seas of Cloud
The seas of cloud have contributed much to the ethereal atmosphere of the Yellow Mountains, making peaks look like islands in the sky. The best time to appreciate this phenomenon is from November to May, especially after rainy/snowy days, at sunrise or sunset.
There are hundreds of peaks and thousands of ravines in the Yellow Mountains, but five seas of cloud are named: North Sea, South Sea, East Sea, West Sea, and the Heavenly Sea (in the middle). Celestial Capital Peak (1,800m/5,900ft), Lotus Peak (1,873m/6,145ft), and Bright Top (1,841m/6,040ft) are the three tallest peaks, and best locations to see the stunning seas of cloud.
Buddha's Light — a Rarely Seen Extra Wonder
Buddha's Light (an optical phenomenon like a halo surrounding the observer's shadow, once thought to show the observer's enlightenment) may be witnessed if the conditions are right. It requires the observer to be between the sun and a cloud. The Yellow Mountains offer ideal conditions when seas of cloud are below the obsever.
Best Places to take Pictures of the Seas of Cloud
South Sea: Jade Screen Tower
North Sea: Refreshing Terrace
East Sea: White Goose Ridge
West Sea: Paiyun Pavilion
Sky Sea: Bright Top
It is necessary to pay attention to the time of when to take pictures of the seas of cloud. Usually, the seas of cloud appear in the fine weather following rain or snow. In addition, the photography position is a critical factor.
About 11 kilometers (7 miles) due northeast of Yixian County, Hongcun Ancient Village has the praise singer's worth of 'a village in the fairy tale Chinese picture'.
With a 900 years existence, Hongcun Ancient Village is designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2000. The village layout resembles body of an ox, with Leigang Hill being the 'head', two huge trees on the hill: the 'horns', the residences: the 'body', a winding stream: the 'entrails', Moon Pond: the 'stomach' and the four bridges forming the 'four legs'.
South Lake (南湖)
Located in the south of Hongcun, South Lake was built in the Ming Dynasty in 1607. Taking West Lake in Hangzhou as its example, South Lake is in the shape of an arch and the lake embankment is divided into two layers. Willow weeping, birds singing, duck playing, water lily blooming…It is very relaxing to spend some time in this area. Hence, it is called the 「Little West Lake」 at the foot of Yellow Mountain. South Lake Academy enjoys a delicious setting on the tranquil South Lake.
Crescent-Shaped Moon Pond (月沼)
Located in the heart of Hongcun, the crescent-shaped Moon Pond is the Ox’s stomach. It was built during the Ming Dynasty (A.D. 1368 - 1644). The Moon Pond is green all year around, like a bright mirror. During the visit here, travelers can always find senior people sitting leisurely to chat with each other, ladies doing some washing by the lake, and kids playing around… What a happy and peaceful scene!
Chengzhi Hall (承志堂)
Chengzhi Hall is the best-preserved old building in Yixian County and earns a reputation as the 「Folk Forbidden City」. Built in 1855, it was the residence of Wang Dinggui, a wealthy salt merchant in the Qing dynasty. The whole building is in wooden structure. Wooden beams and wall panels are decorated with intricate carvings of different themes, such as natural scenery, Chinese mythology or ordinary life scenes from the Qing dynasty. Many of them are gilded in gold.
