我們常說的固定搭配, 我們需要記憶, 其他我們不必專門記憶. 多數情況下短語和組成短語的詞還是有關係的, 比如, take care of, in need of, have a good time.
當然也有不太有關係的， 像put off, kick over ，on the air 等等， 其實細細體會， 多多少少也有聯繫。
有些說法像easy as a pie (cake)(表示非常容易的事）跟中國的很多成語一樣， 有一點比喻的意思， 像杯水車薪， 但它的意思和組成它的字還是有聯繫的。 舉幾個例子我們共同欣賞：空中樓閣：castle in the air , 坐立不安 clime the wall, 廢寢忘食 burn the candle at both ends.
