文化面面觀 Troll 身世探查Troll 在哈利·波特系列叢書中被描繪成是a creature that lives in the mountains.Theyare very large, ugly, small brained, and they have verybadtempers.
事實上,troll這種生物在很多古老的北歐神話中早已有之,在很多世界經典魔幻小說、童話書中也經常出現。下面我們就來探查一下troll的身世。
"The Troll." A statue under the north end of the Aurora Bridgeinthe Fremont neighborhood of Seattle, Washington, USA.
A troll is a fearsome mr of a mythical anthropomorph racefromScandinavia. Their role ranges from fiendish giants - similartothe ogres of England - to a devious, more human-like folk ofthewilderness, living underground in hills, caves or mounds. InOrkneyand Shetland tales, trolls are called trows, adopted from theNorselanguage when these islands were settled by Vikings.
Nordic literature, art and music from the romantic era andonwardshas adapted trolls in various manners - often in the formof anaboriginal race, endowed with oversized ears and noses. Fromhere,as well as from Scandinavian fairy tales such as Three BillyGoatsGruff, trolls have achieved international recognition, and inmodernfantasy literature and role-playing games, trolls arefeatured tothe extent of being stock characters.
The meaning of the word troll is uncertain. It might have hadtheoriginal meaning of supernatural or magical with an overlayofmalignant and perilous. Another likely suggestion is that itmeans"someone who behaves violently". In old Swedish law, trolleriwas aparticular kind of magic intended to do harm. It should benotedthat North Germanic terms such as trolldom (witchcraft)andtrolla/trylle (perform magic tricks) in modernScandinavianlanguages does not imply any connection with themythical beings. Moreover, in the sources for Norse mythology, trollcan signify anyuncanny being, including but not restricted to theNorse giants(j?tnar).
In fairytales and legends trolls are less the people livingnextto humans and more fcenterening creatures. Particularly inthesetales they come in any size and can be as huge as giants orassmall as dwarves. They are often regarded as having poorintellect(especially the males, whereas the females, trollkonor, may bequite cunning), great strength, big noses, long arms, and asbeinghairy and not very beautiful (Once again, females oftenconstitutethe exception, with female trolls frequently being quitecomely). In Scandinavian fairy tales trolls sometimes turn to stoneifexposed to sunlight, a myth generally attributed topareidoliafound in naturally eroded rock outcrops.
In the genre of paleofiction, the distinguishedSwedish-speakingFinnish paleontologist Bjorn Kurtén has entertainedthe theory(e.g. in Dance of the Tiger) that trolls are a distantmemory of anencounter with Neanderthals by our Cro-Magnon ancestorssome 40,000years ago during their migration into northern Europe.Spanishpaleoanthropologist Juan Luis Arsuaga provides evidence forthesetypes of encounters in his book, The Neanderthal"s Necklace(Elcollar del Neandertal, 1999 ). The theory that NeanderthalsandCro-Magnons occupied the same area of Europe at the same timeinhistory has been theorized based on fossil evidence.Otherresearchers believe that they just refer to neighboringtribes. Theproblem with this theory is that neither NeanderthalsorCro-Magnons existed in this part of Europe during the ice-age.Mostof Scandinavia was covered by a large glacier and the area wasnotoccupied until much later.

文化面面觀 Troll 身世探查Another explanation for the troll myth, is that thetrollsrepresent the remains of the forefather-cult which wasubiquitousin Scandinavia until the introduction of Christianity inthe 10thand 11th centuries. In this cult the forefathers wereworshipped insacred groves, by altars or by gravemounds. One of thecustomsassociated with this practice was to sit on top of agravemound atnight, possibly in order to make contact with thedeceased. Withthe introduction of Christianity however, thereligious elitesought to demonize the pagan cult, and denounced theforefathers asevil. For instance, according to Magnus H?konsen"slaws from 1276it is illegal to attempt to wake the"mound-dwellers". It is inthese laws that the word troll appearsfor the first time, denotingsomething heathen and generallyunfavourable.
This fits with the trolls in Norse sagas who are oftentherestless dead, to be wrestled with or otherwise laid torest.
Hermione: Help! Help!
Ron: Hey, pea-brain!
Hermione: Ah! Help!
Harry: Woah!
Ron: Ugh!
Harry: Do something!
Ron: What?
Harry: Anything! Hurry up!
